Peanut Butter

He’d always liked peanut butter, whether it was creamy or crunchy, but he especially liked the extra crunchy, even if it did stick between his teeth more than the others, he didn’t care. He’d eat it anyway he could get it. He liked peanut butter so much that his mom even got to hiding pills in it when he was sick, he’d gulp it down so fast sometimes he didn’t even notice that there were pills in it. Then sometimes he’d notice the pills and wait until mom wasn’t looking and spit them right out. Sometimes she’d find them, but more often than not she wouldn’t. He found he couldn’t separate the capsules out as easily so he got so he’d just swallow them, just to get the peanut butter.
By the tablespoon full was his favorite way to eat it, he’d wait until mom got the jar of peanut butter out, then he’d whine a little like, give me some more, he might not have had the greatest verbal skills around but he always got his point across. He’d been in a lot of pain lately and the doctor’s didn’t know for sure what was wrong, so they drew blood, ran x-rays, and other tests, and this upped his consumption of peanut butter because they, the doctors, would use it as a reward, and of course, mom had more pills to give him. He was happy. He found that if he’d wake up during the night and cry, mom would give him one of the pills that helped him feel better, and she’d invariably give it to him in peanut butter. Other moms might have used jelly but his used peanut butter. She said it was fun to watch him eat it, he’d get it stuck on the roof of his mouth and then make the funniest faces. Mom would laugh and hug him and life would be good.
His sister, she didn’t like peanut butter, never had, but when he started getting it all the time, she started wanting some too, so mom would give her some, not as much as he got, but a little, and she’d get to lick the spoon, he was jealous of that because he used to get to lick the spoon and that was always fun. Mom would hold it for him, and he’d lick the bowl and then the back. It wasn’t fair that Sis got to do this now.
He wondered how long mom would let him keep getting peanut butter when he cried, if she’d notice that he got cranky about the same time every day and every night, just about the time she used to give him peanut butter with his pills? He was feeling better now, and he figured he didn’t really need the pills but he loved that peanut butter, could he fool her for a little longer? He wouldn’t mind going back to it just for treats, but he sure would miss the time when he got it two or three times a day.
Oh well, that’s the life of a greyhound when he’s got a sore neck. Some days everything goes right other days moms figure out you’re faking it and that’s the end of the peanut butter except for treats.

<lol> My dogs did that too, and yes the *power* of the peanut butter was greater than the fact that there was a pill in there.
p/s...I myself tend to succumb to (creamy) peanut butter too...
