Running Back Tandems
June 3rd 2008 21:05
These days everybody says that it is important to have two good running backs and not just use the starter all the time. Is it really important though to run a two back system? Well if we look at the past three super bowl winners then it is important to have a two back system or even more. In 2005 the Steelers won the super bowl and they had a two back system. They used the brusing style of Jerome Bettis and the speed of Willy Parker to win the Super Bowl. In 2006 the Colts won the super bowl and they used Domanic Rhodes and Joseph Addai and that really worked well for them. Both running backs got a lot of carries throughout they year even with Peyton Manning throwing the ball and thus led them to a Super Bowl win. Last year was a little different with the Giants. They usually used three running backs in there system. Throughout the year they used Brandon Jacobs (who had the most carries), Derrick Ward, Reuben Droughns, and Ahmad Bradshaw (who came on late in the season). With the multiple runningbacks they were able to run the ball and eventually win the Super Bowl. By looking at the past three Super Bowl winners I believe it is important to have a two or more back system.
Now looking at this upcoming year I believe the teams with the best running back situations are the Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins, Carolina Panthers, St. Louis Rams, Philladelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennesee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the San Diego Chargers. I would love to hear who you think has the best running back system and/or if you agree with my stance on the two back system.
