Your favourite item of clothing
Over the years I have paid out a small fortune in clothing. As I hop, skip and jump my way around the world so I manage to leave almost an entire wardrobe of clothes everywhere (sorry for you all who have my stuff.... I will be there to collect it soon)
I am not the snazziest of dressers. My job means I walk alot, lift a lot, carry a lot, moan a lot, get cold a lot, get dirty a lot - and seeing as I work.... a lot.... my clothes seem to match that. Whatever I pull out the cupboard means that is what gets worn for the day, although I have a small section of my cupboard dedicated to ' Special Moments'.
That section of my cupboard has also bred many an almost exaggerated number of near extinct species of moth.
That is how often I use it!
However, I have clothes that have stood by me through time. IN particular I have MY BLACK JERSEY. Now I have had this jersey for well over ten years. It has a cigarette burn on the right arm from my smoking days. It has been stained many times with fallen tears wiped away with a shaking hand. It has kept me warm on lonely nights when I had been cold and afraid. It has travelled the world with me and comforted me on nights when I have been homeless, in trouble, in doubt, in need....
My black jersey still lives in my cupboard. It gets worn at least twice a week when it shares my dreams and catches the whispers of my hopes and fears. I love the feel of it against my skin. I love how it shimmers in the light of laundry, outshining the rest and best of my other clothes. I love how many years ago the little zipper got lost somehow and I replaced it with a paper clip... and later realised that this scar was just a war wound.. and it should be loved for simply that. The paper clip is gone, the zipper head now runs up and down the short track when thoughts run through my mind and my hands needs something to do.
I love my black jersey and could never replace it,
So do you have a favourite item of clothing? One that has been with you through thick and thin? One that you could never throw out?

I'm not much of a clothes hoarder - I tend to throw clothes away after a year when I realised I was using my bedroom as a wardrobe and after hearing the #1 fashion tip : throw out anything you haven't used in the last two years. But one item of clothing I will never get rid of is this mini denim skort (half skirt, half shorts - remember when they were in?) I bought in LA back in 95. I haven't worn them - or been able to fit in them - for seven years but they still remain in my closet, waiting for that one retro moment when I can take them out with my white striped clogs.

I'm into the neo slovenly look, and clothing styles that don't bind and pinch when I squat down or bend. So, I tend to wear a lot of sheets around the house. Drop in anytime for a visit.
My wife on the other hand, is a true fashion horse, she can look great in burlap potato sack.

But I bought them in New York (at Saks), and I figure how often does a girl from Melbourne get to buy ridiculously expensive shoes at Saks in New York? Not very often is the answer. I feel very fabulous and special every time I wear them.....even if they are almost 4 yrs old.
I'm terrible and never look after my belongings. But those shoes are still in pristine condition even after all this time.

Mine is a soft old wooly jumper, how about 25 years old, well almost.
It is great and stretchy and goes over lots of things on a cold day. More for the house, I would only go out in it in a hasty trip somewhere that needed fast action, like running out of food.
People still admire the colour but I do think it has that look of "seen better days" about it.
I try to not wear it too much at home as neighbours probably think I have nothing else to wear but when it's cold and I need to feel cosy I have no pride.
About a year ago I acquired a large pair of men's black socks, they are fast becoming a favourite in the cold weather.
As for the clothes you showed us I love the colour and the texture and the sheen.
I'm feeling cosier already, have the socks on, now where is that old jumper? Way to go.

I know your dilemma about looking after clothes... mine always seem to get wrecked. Probably got something to do with me constantly doing stupid things without thinking about how the clothes will turn out!
I would have done the same thing re: the shoes. Good on ya, every girl needs to splash out once in a while.

sounds like the perfect weather for your jersey.
Don`t worry what the neighbours think... if they aren`t named Jones you don`t have to keep up with them!

Well...I'm with Mrs M...
My Jedi / Boxer's robe(s).
A very soft, fluffy light chenille (hey...my robe my Jedi/Boxer fantasy) floor length, hooded, robe with large 'bell' sleeves, deep pockets and it ties at the waist.
The one I have on now, I've had for about 10 years and is the exact replica of the one I had before that for about 8 years... and the one I had before that, for about 7 years and was a present from my father.
I'm pretty obsessive about hunting down exact replicas.
And I start looking for replica replacements when the fabric starts to get threadbare. The colours change though. First one was blue, then black, now grass green (which has got Wallabies, Brumbies and Gamma badges pinned to the lapels)
I have yet to find a fuschia one.
It's what I put on over whatever I've got whenever I'm at home and especially when I'm working.
I do take it off however, when I have meetings as my office is at home!
..and yes I do wear it in Summer!
It's just got the (jedi?) ability to keep me warm in winter and not overheat in summer.
It's a cocoon and yet I feel very...I don't know... empowered, which is weird, I know.
Maybe it's related to the fact that my father gave me the first one and it 'represents' something to me?
... and yes I do go around the house waving my hand and saying "I am not the freak you're looking for"...especially when I hear..."Mum"...
God. What is it with me lately? I've been writing essays/epic sagas all over the place.
Anyway...I did read this post as soon as it was posted Ash and I voted but at that time...was reluctant to leave a comment...felt a bit silly and 'naked'...even though I was fully robed.
I obviously got over that.
This is a lovely post. Very comforting.
big hug hon...sorry about how long this comment is. It's a bit me-deep...!

Thanks for sharing such a great story. Thats like being wrapped up in your dads warm embrace all day long. It must have Jedi powers if you can wear it in summer too!
hahaha hilarious! it`s when the light sabre comes out that I would be a little panicked
uh-huh I know this feeling well, I`m particularly bad about this too and the original NEVER gets trashed.
This is what I love about clothes - it doesn`t matter what it is, there is that sentimentality behind it... it`s like you are wrapped in love when you have it on. And no matter how many times you wash something you always have the smell that lingers that reignites the memories - well this is how I feel about my black jersey anyway! Even as I sit now I can smell.... memories!
Don`t apologise about the length of your comment Dusk - I love it - gives that human touch to the connection.
lotsa hugs to ya

I love 50s era skirts. I love to make them hip and chic. I can not pick which is my favorite (too Sophie's Choice for me!)

..an old denim skirt that I just cannot part with and a pair of really worn black scuffs...both so overdue now, even for the Vinnies bin *chuckle*
These are matched beatifully by two (almost idenitcal) grey jumpers. One has a weave the other plain.
*lol* just this morning (before I saw this post) I had made the decision whilst laying in bed that I would buy new black scuffs this coming summer... but the skirt and jumpers?
They stay for another cycle of seasns, for sure.

I've had this sweater for years... and I'm sure I could let it go if I had another sweater, or a variety to choose from, but it's the only sweater I have and I wear the hell out of it.

It`s like that isn`t it? There are some things that can get easily churfed but others that will continue to stay for many years until you can never part with them.

ahhh the black (goodness is it a jersey? jumper? sweater? top?)
it`s the power of the shirt!
ash
It has buttons up the front that I never ever button, worn over whatever ya happen to have on?? I just slip into it whenever I feel a chill or a need to nestle. When I'm at home, it usually hangs on the back of my desk chair if I'm not wearing it. *grins*
Definitely not a jersey, not a top... but I'm not sure how ya'all are defining jumper, and it's known hear simply as a sweater.

shall I confuse everything and add cardigan in there seeing as it has buttons? I dunno ~laughs @ crazy english~ I know what you mean though - thanks for explaining
