Young tyros win at West Lakes

February 5th 2013 11:56
TWO of Australiaís top prospects advanced to the second round of the Charles Sturt Adelaide International Challenger with respective three-set wins today.
ACTís Nick Kyrgios and South Australian Luke Saville, the past two Australian Open boysí singles champions, overcame more experienced opponents at the West Lakes venue.
Kyrgios eliminated out-of-sorts West Australian Brydan Klein 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1, while Saville came from a set down to oust New South Welshman Dane Propoggia 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
World No. 209 Klein fell to 1-3 this season, including an opening-round loss in Australian Open qualifying, and will slide about 20 ranking spots.

Other significant Australian day-one casualties were Burnie titlist John Millman, James Duckworth and Adam Feeney.
Millman, who will slip from his career-high ranking of 158, plans to return home to Queensland before contesting the Sydney Challenger event from February 23.
Millman lost 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the rematch of the Burnie International final against Frenchman Stephane Robert, Duckworth went down 6-4, 6-3 to Great Britainís James Ward, and Feeney succumbed 6-1, 7-6 (1) to countryman Greg Jones.
It was the second straight tournament Duckworth lost to Ward, which was the same situation for Alex Bolt, who was unsuccessful again in a 7-6 (1), 6-3 result against Matt Reid.
Queenslander John-Patrick Smith went some way to erasing his lethargic Burnie performance with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Italian Andrea Arnaboldi.
It came a day after Smith bowed out with partner Ruan Roelofse, who he won the Burnie doubles title with, in the opening round of the doubles.
Other winners included Burnie semi-finalists Matt Barton and Rubin Statham, Peter Polansky, Colin Ebelthite, Sean Berman and Russian Alexander Lobkov, who trounced Japanís No. 2 seed Hiroki Moriya 6-3, 6-0.
