You can't have any more plastic.
January 3rd 2009 03:19
If you consider that plastic is a man made product based on petroleum, you soon realize that we owe more to the dinosaurs than just our ability to zip around in snazzy vehicles. Some very vital pieces of human life come from plastics today, which means they come from petroleum.
So when you are laying on the operating table with your chest open waiting for your heart transplant, how are you going to feel if your doctor leans down and says, "Sorry but we don't have the proper medical equipment, because you used all those throw away plastic t bags all those years."
It's going to suck pretty bad when we actually have solar-powered cars, but we still don't have enough plastic to make a decent set of tupperware, because we are clogging up entire ecosystems with a plastic bag for every purchase.
So here are ten reasons why YOU can stop using plastic bags now, never mind in 2009.
1. Your groceries deserve better. Have you seen what a PET plastic bag does to your bread and fruit? Cradle your foodstuffs in something nicer.
2. Even two times is not enough for a plastic bag. "But I recycle mine, I use them for trash." Yeah, well so do I, and there is not enough trash in the world to fill all the bags we have. Tie a string around your finger, and every time you throw a plastic bag into the trash without reusing it at least once, smash your hand with a hammer. Then come tell me you recycle your bags.
3. Future archaeologists will wonder why we worshipped baby shit so much that we wrapped it in plastic, not once (diaper), not twice (diaper genie), but three times (discarded grocery bag) before throwing it into a landfill.
4. Resusable bags can carry a variety of messages, including, my bread is better than yours, and I contribute more to the well being of the earth.

I just wish they could come up with a product that disintegrated after going into landfill. That would be much better.

Like me, looks like you also live in a nice part of the world, too nice to soil with plastic ... but its happening. Good news here in Oz, is that later this year Adelaide is following the European lead and offering no more plastic bags in supermarkets.
Celebration!
No loss there, except for the headache of those like me who shop on~line (I wouldnt venture into a modern mall supermarket now, if you paid me. I count my blessings everyday that I am lucky in that i dont have too), but i digress; the down side of home delivery has been my dismay at masses and masses of superflous plastic bags. Too many in fact, and whilst i do recycle everything I can from all the absolutely madness induced packaging that is serves to protect todays grocery from ... what? I am not quite sure ...well, they are faced with problems around the whole question of no more plastic bags, later this year.
There was a suggestion that each home shopper recycle their cloth bags, but it was not taken up, as different households have different hygeine standards and could open things up to a plethora of litigation.
Back to the drawing board *sctratching their heads*.
They are now talking about incorporating the use of these fold/down black plastic crates. You pay a few dollars deposit and give the old ones back each week, when the new ones arrive. tit for tat... it will be interesting to see what they do decide on in the end?
Ha! I was just talking to someone about recycling all the plastic in the world (and currently floating around in the Pacific Ocean), to make the new lighter solar cars of the future. safety wouldnt be a problem if all the cars were the same... trouble is they may have to go a little slower ...
A great post, I really enjoyed it.

Recognizing, of course, I am a sinner. It's so hard! I try to carry a bigger purse, put small purchases in there.
