Yo, Banks! What ‘ya trying to do?
November 16th 2006 07:58
Ah, the weekends, people running around shopping and dating at department stores, or tackling the little mischief at home was the norm city life of Kuala Lumpur these days; and here I am, doing my weekend laundry with my blessed little washing machine and flipping through an outdated newspaper when I suddenly stopped at almost every page of colourful advertisements from credit card banks, with big striking labels and catchy words, never failing to attract any young readers or credit card holder’s eyes.
“YOU NEED QUICK CASH
We’ll give it to you in 24 hours”
“FROM 1 SEPTEMBER – 31 OCTOBER 2006, CHARGE YOUR MASTERCARD AND GET A GRANDVISION COOLKIT MP3 ABSOLUTELY FREE!”
These are only some of the advertisements I found from the local newspaper, and ironically, these are printed in huge letters, but they never fail to print the fine prints of terms and conditions in the most infinite way.
Then I recalled seeing a small leaflet from my credit card bill that states about “SMART SPENDING” with the nice steps onto reminding you when you should use your credit cards.
“use credit Wisely
Credit cards are the form of credit most people will apply for and use during their lifetime. It is a financial tool you can use to your advantage, if managed responsibly. Information is the key to managing your credit cards well.
Once you understand how they work, you can control of your finances.”
So, what’s the deal here? Do you want us to spend or not to spend? That would be the confused questions bogging the weaker conscious credit card holders. And why I would say that? Because most credit card users never really applied credit cards in a clear state of mind, knowing and reminding them why they need it at the first place. They usually own it with impulse, the by-product of lucrative promotions from sales personnel during road shows in shopping centres.
With the 2 major festive season hitting in 10 days time, the “battle between credit card banks” will go up, encouraging their customer to spend more or luring more “innocent” victims to join sign up and get the money rolling.
