What is an accredited Degree

May 5th 2011 08:45
In almost every country there are laws to regulate the higher education institutions. The governments make an enforce laws to prevent the falling of education standards. This means just anybody or any organization cannot award degrees. Even, using of the word university is not allowed in the name of any business or educational institute without government approval. Granting approval to run higher education institute that can award degrees is very strict in any country. The approval is granted only if the institution is accredited by a recognized accrediting authority. Accreditation is certification of the quality for an institution of higher education, its capacity, its resources and awards like diplomas and degrees.

Why an Accredited Degree?

Prospective employers may not recognize and respect your degree if it is not accredited.

There are various institutions set up focusing on making easy money by conferring degrees to people without providing any worthwhile education, without properly assessing the knowledge of the students and without proper approvals from the government. The bogus universities (colleges), also called degree mills, offering genuine looking degrees have bogus accrediting authorities too. This is why the students shall be careful when they enroll for a degree program. Check whether the university has proper accreditation. The program you intend to follow and the degree you are awarded at the end also should be accredited by a recognized authority.

How do you know whether a Degree is Accredited?

Registers of universities run with government approval are maintained by the education authorities in many countries. Students can check with the proper authorities. It is an easy task if the databases are accessible through internet. Following are some of the accrediting authorities.

Before enrolling for any program check and find the accreditation level of the university and the program. You can avoid wasting your money and a couple of years of work and few years of most enjoyable part of your life on a useless paper (your Degree that is not recognized by anybody)

Why a Degree?

It may cost a Lot to Get a Degree

To complete a Bachelor's degree a student has spend three or four years from his life (worst is these are the most enjoyable years of anybody's life) and a sizable amount of money depending on the country where the student is going to follow the program. If the University is a higher ranking prestigious one the cost is more. For professional degrees like Medicine, Engineering and Management the time required to complete the program and the cost also can be a lot higher than the other courses. In General a Bachelor's degree will cost anywhere between 50,000 to 400,000 Dollars in USA without considering the living expenses of the student.

Foreign Degrees

But today there are many options are available to students to get a degree without enrolling in a university closest to his/her home. Getting admission to a university in a foreign country and following a degree program will be a good experience, and in some cases adds value also to the degree. Sometimes students can find degree programs that are less expensive than in their own countries. If the student is interested in pursuing a career in hospitality industry, tourism, international trade or foreign languages the value of foreign education cannot be measured in Dollars.

Online Degrees Programs

Following a degree program online also is a very viable option today. However, when a student enrolls in a degree program whether it is on-campus or online it is essential to check for the credentials of the university offering the program and whether the university and the program are accredited by a recognized accrediting organization. Though in the past the online degrees were considered inferior, they are getting more and more popular and recognized. This is not without reason. With the new technologies like computers, internet, speedy and relatively cheaper communication facilities have made it possible to improve the standards of education provided through online programs.

Is it worth to get a Degree?

Yes. Why? Nowadays, there is not much difference in the earning potential of a person entering the workforce whether he has a degree or not. For many students in the High school it may seem that skipping the three or four years of university (college for US) and going for some job is a double gain, saving the cost and earning from the job. But have you ever thought about the type of work you get and the potential for the promotions. Without a degree and the proper education that is represented by the degree you’ll have to stagnate at the level you join for the rest of your life. At the retiring age you’ll regret for all those opportunities lost due to lack of proper qualifications.

High School Students must Think Twice (or may be many more times) before they decide not to go to College

When the students finish their high school, it is easy for them to find some job and start earning. Some students postpone their tertiary education hoping they would get a degree later in their lives. This is a very tedious task. People, who have juggled with a job, running a family and studying for a degree after many years since they left high school, know how difficult it is. My advice for any student finishing the high school is to get a degree before considering a full time job. The three years and the money spent for an appropriate degree will be a very good investment that will brave inflation, depression and all other economic nightmares.
