Xbox 360 'Classics' ...Resident Evil 5

XBOX classics

Resident evil 5

2010 is promising to be an amazing year for gaming with titles such as Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, Final Fantasy XIII and many more hitting our shelves. But Lets not forget about the great games of the recent past, especially with more and more great titles being added to the Xbox ‘classics’ list. One such as example is Resident Evil 5 which from the 09/02/10 will join this band of veteran games and be available for purchase at between fifteen and twenty pounds. In this review I am going to let you know that if you don’t yet own this bundle of cooperative joy, then just why you should!

You see the thing about this game is that it is purpose built for cooperative play, with cut scene/real time button bashing events, with you and a friend having to press different sequences of buttons consequently meaning if one fails then both fail. Also at certain times during the game it requires you and your teammate to separate and complete different objectives in order for you to succeed at your mission. This isn’t a bad thing though with a real need for teamwork being achieved, but also with the knowledge that both characters have a real individual place in the action.

The game is based in Africa and you take control of the one and only Chris Redfield, the hero from the first ever instalment of this fantastic franchise. (anyone else get that warm nostalgic feeling?…..those simpler times of on the spot 180 degree turns and terrible voice acting ) Local babe Sheva Alomar joins him and together they must fight of waves of natives, who have all at varying degrees mutated in to horrible Resident Evil style nastiness.

There are negative points to this game, movement can be a little sluggish and you still cant move when using your weapons, which is of course ridiculous in the modern era. Also anyone who remembers the creepy/ scary resident evil’s of the past and expect the same from this version will be very disappointed because it just quite simply is not scary…. not one bit.

If you don’t happen to be on Xbox Live or have someone to play it with don’t worry too much as the computer AI you team up with is not actually that bad and can hold their own. Having said that though be under no illusions the experience is somewhat better when you have someone talking down your headset to congratulate you on a beautiful head shot etc..!. Aside from the multiplayer aspect of the game there are many other reasons to snap this up and the potential for multiple play through’s is one such example. During the game there are certain things to find and collect, including weaponry and jewels, which can then be sold for cash. At the end of each mission you get a rating taking into account factors such as time and kills, which if your anything like me means plenty of replayability. There is the option to then buy and upgrade your weaponry, which can then be used in any further play through and believe me this is as good a reason as any to have another go because there are some seriously powerful weapons to unlock!

I completed the game fully on all four difficulties with each time taking around ten hours, but there are certain missions I played far more in order to gain collectables to upgrade and buy weapons. This is a game which is meant to be replayed. There is also a decent side game known as ‘Mercenaries’ available, which is basically a survivor mode with endless streams of enemies to kill, which is an enjoyable gorefest but nothing out of the ordinary.

The graphics are great, the weapons you can acquire are fantastically effective, and there are some great enemies and tough bosses to kill. With hours of gameplay and cooperative fun to be had, along with appearances from old favourites this game is a steal at half its original price and I would defiantly recommend you get out there and buy it!

9/10
