Students & Young Graduates

March 4th 2009 16:02
Fancy making a difference?
We are a student-led charity that focuses on removing barriers to development using engineering.
Our programmes provide opportunities for young engineers in the UK to learn about technology's role in development.
By taking part in our activities, and with the support of the EWB-UK community, our members are making a difference to people's lives around the world.

Planning On Disaster

February 27th 2009 14:54
The Government has specifically brought in legislation encouraging EfW.
Problem? One major area facing developers and investors in EfW schemes is the Government itself via the planning processes at local level.
Projects become delayed, they rack up costs and put everybody off.
Get it sorted.

Anaerobic Digestion (AD)

February 27th 2009 13:58
Combustion by EfW, as posted below, is not the only hopeful process.
Anaerobic digestion is a series of processes in which microorganisms break down BIODEGRADABLE material in the absence of oxygen.
It is widely used to treat 'wet' waste such as SLUDGES and ORGANICS because it provides REDUCTION of both volume and mass of the input material.
Such 'wet' wastes are unsuitable for EfW schemes.
As part of an integrated waste management system, anaerobic digestion REDUCES the emission of landfill gas into the atmosphere.
Anaerobic digestion is a RENEWABLE energy source because the process produces a methane and carbon dioxide rich BIO-GAS suitable for energy production and helping to REPLACE fossil fuels.
Plus, the nutrient-rich SOLIDS left after digestion can be used as FERTILISER.

EfW Example

February 26th 2009 15:49
In Manchester (UK), Greater Manchester Waste (GMW) Ltd, handles 1.4 MILLION tonnes of solid (normal) household waste every year (45% of their solid waste) in a purpose built EfW power station.

It takes EVERYTHING that is normally collected from the kerbside (in black bags etc).
It then separates, in-house, any steel and aluminium and other recoverable items for conventional recycling.

The remainder is COMBUSTED and produces enough power for the equivalent of 7,000 homes (10 megawatts).

The chimneys have special filters that prevent any harmful elements entering the atmosphere.

It works, and every local authority should receive incentives to build them.

The Lottery was used to get every community a theatre, so why not an EfW power station?

Recycling Paper

February 26th 2009 15:24
Forget it.

Put it in an EfW station. It doesn't matter if it's coated, coloured, laminated, loaded with ink or whatever. People are wasting their efforts in trying to separate all these things.

BURN IT, BURN IT, BURN IT. (sorry, COMBUST IT, COMBUST IT, COMBUST IT)
Get ENERGY, ENERGY, ENERGY.

No one in the paper business thinks recycling (to make more paper) is effective or worthwhile.

Combined Heat & Power(CHP) EfW Stations

February 26th 2009 15:12
These are improved EfW stations. They produce TWO types of energy from the combustion process: HEAT and ELECTRICITY.

In Denmark they have produced special pipes that can carry the HEAT for over 100 kilometres!
The electricity goes directly into the local grid.

Landfill, you gotta be kidding.

Energy From Waste (EfW)

February 26th 2009 14:54
Why landfill when ENERGY can be produced from most of the waste?
Turn waste into a valuable RESOURCE.
EfW Power Stations are the answer.
They can provide HEAT and therefore make a contribution to affordable energy.
They will REDUCE greenhouse gas emissions.

Problem? Only about 20 in UK at present.

Problem? People, and Governments, and even Greenpeace, don't know difference between the COMBUSTION processes in EfW that produces usable heat, and INCINERATION that simply burns waste.

Recycling

February 25th 2009 19:52
Often more energy is used and more greenhouse gases are emitted in the recycling process, than were used to produce the item in the first place.
