Write about what you know
September 27th 2007 06:40
As a writer you probably already know the refrain: write about what you know. Unfortunately with the bloggers and other amateur writers, the focus is on a lot of gossip and hype - and not a lot on what people know or are experts in.
That's fine for fun, but when it's time to get serious about publishing, then researching discriminately and using your own mind is the only way to go.
I am interested in climate change topics, but I'll leave writing about it to the experts and those seriously involved, such as this blogger : http://www.climatered.com/
My main topic is money matters (saving, investing) - but what do you care about that if your world revolves around building houses?
Stick to what you know, expand on what you know, become a niche expert, and you will find your market.

I never heard of any writer taking their words to market before.
I'm one for progress though, so fatten my words up and start the bideting.
Why not write about what you don't know?
Sounds just as valid to me.

Good advice. I'm qualified to write about economics, business news, sharemarket news, logistics and shipping and international trade development. But, guess what, my passion is for writing other things. Since Sep 07 it's about matters spirit versus soul. During 2005/06 the logistics of rebuilding tsunami-hit Aceh in Indonesia.
Maybe this is good advice too. Lay out a simple-to-use website with a prominent What's New section, preferably on the Home page so it'll be frequently browsed. Carry out lots of research. Register your site to the world's principal ones dealing with the same specialisations.
Don't worry about whether you get a lot of hits straight away. Just keep on building the research, making new stories to new pages whose summary/headings appear in a contents list below What's New.
Consider a system of stating keywords in the contents list so that it acts as an index too.
Here's how I've done it. LINK
It links operates in conjunction with my Orble site, inviting reader comments.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for starting this theme. Hope others share in the advice compilation too.
Cheers, Big Cat

Yes I agree that blogging is an outlet for a passion. Your website seems to be very niche, and not easy to follow for the average housewife... but it depends if your ultimate aim is to get more readers or to convince some readers of your outlook.
Anyhow, I'm learning that what makes a popular blog I so dont care about, ie gossip, celebrities and weirdo stuff. Luckily I dont care about popularity...
So let's just to thy own self be true...
