Wozniacki charges into New Haven decider

RAIN forced New Haven action indoors for the women, but will see the men’s semi-finals and finals played on the same day tonight.
Dane world No.9 Caroline Wozniacki proved too good for the player immediately behind her in the rankings, Italian Flavia Pennetta, in a 6-4 6-1 final-four demolition.
It will be Wozniacki’s seventh final of the season and the 19-year-old will chase her third title.
But Russian Elena Vesnina caused a boilover in the other semi-final; upsetting Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo 5-7 6-1 6-2.
Mauresmo actually led 2-0 in the deciding set, but lost the final six games of the contest.
The former world No.1 will still be pleased with her week, which included victory over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, and will be confident of winning her first-round US Open clash with German Tatjana Malek.
Twenty-three-year-old Vesnina, who also shocked Australian world No.15 Sam Stosur this week, is an interesting competitor.
She was not even a top-100 player at junior level, but currently sits at a career-high ranking of 32.
Vesnina has taken longer to make her mark than some of her Russian compatriots, but is coming off a fourth-round showing at Wimbledon and rates hardcourts as her favourite surface.
She has won only one match in three US Open appearances, but is the 31st seed this year and opens against tough Czech Lucie Hradecka.
Wozniacki leads Vesnina 3-1 in head-to-head match-ups, but they have shared their two meetings this year.
Vesnina beat Wozniacki on an Auckland hardcourt in January, but expect the latter to come out on top this time around.
