Would you like some white tea?

I would like to start off this blog by talking a little about white tea. White tea has a delicate flavour compared to green tea or even black tea. In my experience of drinking white tea, it has its own unique taste to it – one which is more selective than that of its more popular herbal counterparts. If I had to compare it to anything, I suppose I would compare it to being like a blend of chamomile and green tea.
The history of white tea
The origins of white tea are complex, but it is generally believed to have started in China and its first mention is in an English publication in 1876. However, it’s history goes much further back than that as it’s also thought to be one of China’s oldest teas – primarily because its leaves are only lightly oxidised, meaning that it did not require a great deal of cooking to make.
This is one of the reasons in which white tea is so highly prized in terms of its health benefits. Primarily because the tea leaves are only lightly cooked and therefore do not lose enzymes during the cooking process.
The health benefits of white tea
Some of the health benefits that white tea is believed to help with include providing the drinker with an enhanced cardiovascular function and greater antibacterial and antiviral properties as a result of the high level of catechins and antioxidants found in this tea.
Catechins are polyphenol antioxidants which can help to reduce the cholesterol level in the body and improve blood vessel function. The antioxidants have also been noted as potentially helping to boost the immune system - which could ward off pneumonia, staphylococcus infections, fungus growth and even cardiovascular disease.
These are just some of the fantastic benefits of white tea. Once you get used to the flavour, you will begin to enjoy this delicate tea for what it is. It is very similar to green tea in terms of health benefits, but is a lot milder and doesn’t contain the caffeine which green tea has. Therefore you won't noticeably feel any side effects off white tea – especially if you drink too much.
Overall, white tea is a refreshing drink and one which you’ll want to savour during some relaxation time to yourself. Not only will you enjoy this brew, but thinking about the health benefits will make you feel good too!
