World Youth Day - a boost for Aussie sex workers? (LINK)
June 10th 2008 04:34
Well, the word has come down from on high - Sydney's up coming World Youth Day is going to boost the sex industry by 8% in the next year!
I wonder what the Pope has to say about that?
Really. Imagine how he must feel. Here he is, arranging a nice little bash for all the good little Catholic kips around the world only to discover he's directly involved in turning Sydney into a den of vice and iniquity.
Though, what am I saying... "turning into".
Industry analysts, IBISWorld, have predicted the next year will have strong growth for brothels, strip clubs and other sex workers as the tourism trade enjoys a boon in the wake of the religious festivity. (See the accompanying link for the news article.)
The truth is, no matter what any statistics, reports or brothel owners looking out for their own interests tell you, the sex industry has been struggling with a steady decrease of business over the last twenty years.
I can remember a time when the clients came in droves, fistfuls of cash flung at our madly undulating, delirious bodies as we revelled in the money we so effortlessly earned. $1000 and $2000 nights were the norm, and no worker went home empty-handed.
Over the years I've watched the decline with growing horror as now we struggle and bicker with each other for every tight-fisted client who argues for services inclusive of extras he once would've cheerfully paid for.
Long gone are the days when the standard service was nothing more than massage, oral and full service. When kissing was 'extra'. Now you've practically got to throw in a buffet lunch to get them to fork over the moolah and that oral better be mutual or they'll feel ripped off!
It's not the clients' fault. They're suffering too, as the economy has gone down, city living has gone up and people are struggling to stretch what little cash can be made as far as it will go. Which, these days, ain't far at all, folks.
But just as the men-folk are feeling the pressure, so too are the women of Australia. Combined with a more positive attitude to female sexuality, the result is more and more of them are looking at sex work as a viable employment option.
So we've got an over-supply and an under-demand.
But sex is one of the key never-ending needs of the modern Australian, so the industry's hardly dead in the water. It's just floundering a little. And us old swimmers are wondering when the little newbies with their floaties are gonna move out of our pond. It's clear they're not cut out for it, and there's just not that many fish in the sea left anymore.
But even $300 - $500 a day looks good when you've come from barely scraping $20 an hour - right? It's hard to give up, even if you're having second thoughts. And hey, if you score a loyal regular or two, you'll at least be kept in bread and butter.
I've long since given up on the brothels - sitting in my high heels, make up and wig for five hours before a single client walked in the door got real old real fast - and now go it solo. I can charge more (and do) and see a better class of client (and do) and ultimately work less for more money. But I wish I'd taken the plunge a few years back when money was still booming.
Frankly, I'd love if it World Youth Day lives up to its promise and brings a little lifeforce back into the sex industry. I've got a house deposit to save up for, not to mention those gorgeous Mollini stilettos I saw on Pitt St the other day. Better get cracking and update the content on my website, plus dust off those old thigh-high boots and riding crop. These religious types like it a little rough.
Religious types, says you? Surely they won't be knocking on your door, Starlet!
That's charmingly naive. As for IBISWorld senior industry analyst, Ed Butler's rather amusing quote that "World Youth Day will also bring out a certain number of non-religious people..." as though the religious crew won't be checking out the B & D services on the sly, all I have to say to that is this:
A mate of mine has already prepared for World Youth Day by getting a new crop of photos done for her website. Of her wearing her latex nun uniform.
Bring it on!

How honest of you to start a blog like this. A great idea. I am really impressed. I am also pretty sure that this is how Diablo Cody, the woman that wrote Juno, got her start, except I think she was a stripper. But anyway, congrats and I look forward to reading more from you.
Cheers,
Bec
