My favorite series by L. E. Modesitt, Jr. is the Spellsong Cycle. I bought the Soprano Sorceress because I liked other books Modesitt wrote and it was on sale. I'm rather cheap. It was a hardback selling for less than a paperback, and the premise sounded interesting.
The series starts with Anna feeling out of sorts and very tired of the life she was living at that time. She wishes she could be anywhere but where she was at that moment. The next thing she knows she's staring at 2 people dressed in strange clothing and speaking strangely. All the people in that world insist she's a sorceress, but she doesn't believe them at first. Learning by trial and error, Anna doesn't realize there are rules to the magic she's using that she, unknowing, has broken. Many of the rulers in the lands that are enemies of Defalk, her adopted land, tried to kill her. Even the conquerer of her adopted land used her to defend Defalk and then wanted to kill her after she defeated a huge army. However, she killed him first and took over the country. This isn't the end of the first book, but I don't want to spoil the book for you.
The second book in the series, The Spellsong War continues with Anna beset on every side by those who want to kill her. Even some members of the nobility of Defalk, who she's killing herself to defend, are trying to kill her. She has to fight some of the nobles to keep the land safe and collect the taxes they weren't paying to pay for arms to defend Defalk. Anna is still trying to sort out the customs of the people and is surprised by some of the prejudices the natives have about dancing. Not growing up in a culture can lead to misunderstandings and dangerous surprises.
The third book in the series, Darksong Rising, brings more war and more treachery by the nobles. Dissatisfied nobles attack her castle and try to kill her and the young heirs of other nobles placed in her care to be schooled. Defalk is invaded by 2 countries from different directions. A supporting noble is attacked and killed by a sorcerer. Sorcerers lie in wait to kill kill her while she's passing through her supporter's land. All this makes for an exciting read.
Several years later Modesitt added 2 more books to the series. The Shadow Sorceress and Shadowsinger : A Spellsong Cycle Novel continue the saga. Anna dies and Secca becomes head sorceress. With Anna's death, a land that keeps its women in chains starts trying to conquer Defalk and all the lands around it. She finds help in a surprising place, and continues the fight to keep Defalk safe.
I read books more than once, and I've read each of these books at least 2 times, and would read them again if I could.
