Preview: South Korea vs Greece

May 21st 2010 04:44
Let's now look at the opening Group B game with South Korea vs Greece taking place live at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, June 12 2010. South Korea will come in as huge underdogs because let's face it - they are not the same team as they were under Guus Hiddink. It was clearly obvious the moment the Dutchman left. Sure, they continue to dominate Asian football along with Japan and Australia, but they have lacked a genuine game changing player, or the ability to produce them in any decent supply. Manchester United's Park Ji Sung will once again be their key player but they have relied on him for much too long now and familiarity breeds familiarity which means other teams know how to keep hold of a player that is known more for his energetic running and undying effort instead of creativity or vision.

Otto Rehhagel has never strayed far from his usual tactics with Greece and it will be a total focus on defending again. After their amazing, but ultimately less than inspiring, run to the Euro finals a couple years back, the Greek have been synonymous with dour football with the agenda on keeping clean sheets before trying their luck scoring a goal or two to get a win. In a group with the two main favourites hardly having had the best of preparations, Greece may actually have a realistic chance of getting through to the next round. But everything will depend on how well they do against the South Koreans whom many are tipping to prop up Group B with their lack of star appeal and the presence of Argentina and Nigeria completing the group.

South Korea will no doubt open with their strategy centred around tight defending and tireless hassling of players on and off the ball. It worked with great results in the 2002 World Cup but that was in the comfort of familiar surroundings and most have already gotten round to their methods. It could still prove effective against Greece but against the other two of Argentina and Nigeria, they may come undone although it is always unpredictable against those two countries. There has been a resurgence of Korean football at club level though as the K League has seen many of their clubs doing well against the region's best. But whether the best domestic players can make the next level internationally remains to be seen.

Greece may even be considered to be the South Korea of Europe with their style and tactics. Good, organised lineup with emphasis on tactical maneuvering in order to get the better of opponents. Yet they have an over reliance on making sure the other side does not score against them, and when that cannot be prevented, Greece usually end up doing no better than a draw, such is the lack of cutting edge upfront. What cannot be denied though is a very tough set of defenders best exemplified - at least publicly due to his greater exposure with Liverpool - in Sotiris Kyrgiakos. The loss of form this past season of Celtic striker Giorgos Samaras will be a concern although his flair will continue to be a key factor for Greek success.

Preview: Uruguay vs France

May 12th 2010 04:33
Our second World Cup 2010 preview will focus on the second Group A match that features Uruguay vs France. Both teams are actually favourites to come through the group and go on to the second round and rightly so. Uruguay have already impressed during their qualifiers where they even finished ahead of Argentina although many might regard that as child's play given how badly Diego Maradona's team struggled under his lead. Whatever the case, there is no lack of star quality in the South American team and much of the focus will be on Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez - both of whom are hotshots in European football and will provide much of the thrust required by Uruguay if they hope to start well in the World Cup 2010 finals with a win over France.

France might have some interesting names traveling to South Africa with coach Robert Domenach's announcement of his provisional squad of 30 players on Tuesday. There will be no room for Real Madrid's Karim Benzema after the coach accused the player of being too selfish and will not fit in the team makeup. The old guard are also starting to be phased out with the omission of Patrick Viera although Thierry Henry remains in the team - possibly due to his influence over the younger players and helping to create the controversial goal that sent the French to the World Cup finals in place of the hard done by Irish. Djibril Cisse has been rewarded for his goalscoring ways in Greece and a largely unproven midfield group will have to carry the burden of banishing France's nightmare campaign under Domenach in the last two major tournaments.

Group A is undeniably a tough one despite South Africa's lack of results leading up to the finals and Mexico often greatly underestimated. Uruguay and France may be giants in their own right partly due to what the two countries did in the past, but what matters most is right now. Playing the underdogs have always benefited the South Americans more and they will certainly be cast in that light against France - who apart from having won the World Cup previously also have players who are continuously hyped up by the media. Henry is a spent force at the top level but he continues to feature for the national team and his public criticism and outburst against Domenach during the qualifiers certainly hints at who the real boss is behind the scenes.

If Domenach can somehow get his team to work properly together, there is no doubt that they will grind out the result against Uruguay. But the dangermen in Forlan and Suarez will prove a constant threat. Suarez in particular has become one of the hottest properties in European football after scoring tons of goals with Ajax over the last couple of seasons. It should not be too long before the player attracts attention from some of the biggest clubs and Manchester United have already been monitoring his progress for some time. A settled partnership with Forlan will also be something working in Uruguay's favour and hopefully the match will not suffer from a conservative French approach.

Preview: South Africa vs Mexico

May 5th 2010 03:42
With the World Cup 2010 finals approaching, let us take a look at some of the key fixtures that are sure to be highlights in the tournament. The opening game is usually the one that sets the tone for the rest of the competition and once again, it will feature the host country, this time being South Africa. Bundled together in a difficult group featuring South American giants Uruguay, former world champions France and always tricky Mexico, the hosts will kick off against the latter in a potentially difficult opener.

There has been a lot of pressure on South Africa in the intervening years since FIFA awarded the World Cup 2010 finals to them. Much talk has been about the ability of the country to fund and finish the construction of the facilities and infrastructure required to stage the competition. Many felt that it would be a miracle if they managed to complete anything and previews of the stadiums and infrastructure have not been too appealing. However, do not rule out FIFA from stepping in to ensure everything runs like clockwork once the tourney starts.

South Africa has also faced criticism for their performance on the pitch - which can be hard to gauge considering they do not have to go through a competitive environment that qualifiers experience in the leadup to the finals. Results in friendlies have been less than desirable while they failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations finals. There is already talk of them being one of the few rare host countries to be eliminated in the group stage.

South Africa have a few outstanding individuals such as Benni McCarthy and Steven Pienaar, the latter of whom has been in outstanding form for Premier League club Everton and has attracted much attention from Manchester United and Liverpool. But Carlos Alberto Perreira does appear to have his hands full trying to guide the country to a respectable showing and they will need their fans to turn out in full force to back them. He has done it before and do not forget Perreira is a former World Cup winner with Brazil.

Mexico will always be Mexico and with a nation full of football fanatics behind them, they will alway do their best to entertain and surprise. The Latin Americans have a whole host of talent that coach Javier Aguirre managed to harness together in time to qualify for the finals after almost missing out at one point. They may lack the physical stature and global experience that comes with exporting their best players to foreign clubs but that is also improving with time. Javier Hernandez joined a growing number of Mexicans snapped up by big clubs after signing for Manchester United a couple of weeks ago. Rafael Marquez plays for Barcelona and if all these experienced internationals can guide the younger players, then there is a possibility that they may light up the world stage in South Africa.

A full stadium is expected for hosts South Africa's opening match and it might play both ways - can the hosts overcome their nerves to play with inspiration and open the tournament with a resounding win, or will Mexico arrive with little fear and dominate an opponent that might be gripped by stage fright?

It wasn't entirely unexpected given that the player has pretty much been in decline after leaving Manchester United but Holland coach Bert van Marwijk finally ended Ruud van Nistelrooy's hopes of making a comeback on the international stage at the World Cup 2010 finals. The training squad that will gather for Holland's training camp next week did not have the striker's name included.

In all seriousness, there is really no chance of Van Nistelrooy still plying his trade for the Dutch on the world stage. There is very little substitute for class - which the player has - but his pace has long gone and despite his move to Hamburg in January to engineer a return to the national team, there are many other better, and younger, options available for Van Marwijk

News has seeped in that the France Football Federation has put an offer on the table for Laurent Blanc to succeed Robert Domenach as coach of the French national team after the World Cup. The latter will be stepping down at the end of the South Africa tournament after a period in charge which has been dominated by poor results and shocking scandals.

The French daily L'Equipe quoted FFF president Jean-Pierre Escalettes as saying that Blanc will decide after Bordeaux's season ends. While the young coach is a popular choice with French football fans and obviously with the authorities, they should take some time to examine if he could still be the right choice for the long term

In an announcement that was highly expected but still disappointing nevertheless, Kevin Kuranyi will not be part of Germany's World Cup plans this summer after the national side's manager Joachim Low confirmed that he will continue to leave the striker in international exile.

There has been a history of bad blood between the Schalke striker and Low ever since the latter felt he was humiliated publicly by Kuranyi's walkout from the team in October 2008, when he was left out of the matchday squad altogether in a World Cup qualifier against Russia. The lanky player left the stadium without informing both the manager and his backroom staff and it was not until the squad was ready to leave on the team bus that Low found out what had happened

While Chelsea celebrates taking another step closer to their first Premier League title in four seasons, there might be more worried looks on Ivory Coast fans each time they see Didier Drogba fall on the turf. The Blues striker might be in blistering form this season with plenty of goals for both club and country, but recent news that he is carrying a hernia problem would not have brought any smiles to the faces of his fellow countrymen.

Drogba has also revealed that he will not be operating on the hernia until after the World Cup in South Africa. This would be perfectly understandable given that going under the knife now would rule him out of the tournament fitness-wise
