Women in Politics
November 13th 2006 05:31
I often lament at the low number of women in politics in Australia. The Australian Labor party has a system whereby the numbers of women preselected is pre-ordained by the Party. Certainly it works well in that many more women have been successful in getting into Parliament in both State and Federal level.
The Australian Liberal Party does not have such a system. Women are supposed to be preselected on their merits. Does that work? Well, perhaps you can guess, that it doesn't all the time. With the Liberal Party being a bit of an "old boys network" there is a perception that it is almost impossible to get in. There certainly have been women as Senators in Queensland, but at present there are no femaile senators, and the likelihood of there being one is quite remote.
There is a wonderful woman in the Liberal ticket for the next Federal election for Queensland, but she is in an unwinnable position. It is hoped that the Libs will get an extra senator at the next election, but number 3 is a bloke. No 4 is the unlucky lady.
Whilst I don't approve of a Quota system like the Labor Party, I find it extra ordinary that the woman candidate is relegated to the unwinnable spot.
