Will Didier Drogba Be Fit For Ivory Coast?

May 3rd 2010 09:41
While Chelsea celebrates taking another step closer to their first Premier League title in four seasons, there might be more worried looks on Ivory Coast fans each time they see Didier Drogba fall on the turf. The Blues striker might be in blistering form this season with plenty of goals for both club and country, but recent news that he is carrying a hernia problem would not have brought any smiles to the faces of his fellow countrymen.

Drogba has also revealed that he will not be operating on the hernia until after the World Cup in South Africa. This would be perfectly understandable given that going under the knife now would rule him out of the tournament fitness-wise.

However, a hernia can often be painful and while there is the quick fix solution of a pain killing injection, it is only temporary. And playing with pain can often limit a player's effectiveness - something which could come up with a player of Drogba's style.

The Ivorian is a modern day version of the battering ram centre forward - a type of player that has made him such a success in both English football and on the European stage. Drogba has also allied pace and a fearsome finish with his physical power and is still considered one of the world's best strikers despite approaching his twilight years.

So far Drogba has not shown any ill effects of the hernia problem and continues to net the important goals for Chelsea. But if the situation worsens between the end of the season and the start of the World Cup, he might not even get to play whether he opts for surgery or not.

Football fans, especially Ivory Coast ones, would certainly hope not as it would rob the tournament of one of the best players that may grace its huge stage. His team mates will also be for the worse without his goals and leadership on the field.
