Wil Farrel and Jack Black sing a sad clown song
February 26th 2007 21:26
Before presenting an award at the 79th annual Oscars on Feb. Wil Farrel and Jack Black sang a poor “us” song about the sad comedians at the Oscars who never win. That’s not exactly true.
It is true many comedians that are nominated like Eddie Murphy for “Dream girls” and Wil Smith for “The Pursuit of Happiness” are nominated for their more serious roles, but the comedy side of some of these roles help make the movie more enjoyable. Eddie Murphy’s Character in Dream girls talking about he was the first to wear Rhine stones and the first do things most people thought was Elvis was really fun. Especially when you think of music history and realize he was probably right.
Jack Black and John C. Reilly, who also helped with the song, have been in at least Oscar nominated movies. Black was a huge part of “King Kong” that won awards at the 2005 (78th)Oscars for ART DIRECTION -- Art Direction: Grant Major; Set Decoration: Dan Hennah and Simon Bright * SOUND EDITING -- Mike Hopkins and Ethan Van der Ryn * SOUND MIXING -- Christopher Boyes, Michael Semanick, Michael Hedges and Hammond Peek * VISUAL EFFECTS -- Joe Letteri, Brian Van't Hul, Christian Rivers and Richard Taylor. No awards for him or any acting in the movie, but it did well. Reilly was nominated at the 2002 (75th) Oscars for ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE -- “Chicago” {"Amos Hart"}. So they maybe sad clowns that didn’t win for their nominated movies.
But there have been comedians who have won for their performances. Jamie Foxx won at the Oscar in 2004 (77th) for ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE -- Ray {"Ray Charles"}. Robin Williams won for ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE -- Good Will Hunting in
2004 (77th). Going back a few years Red Buttons won a 1957 Oscar for "Sayonara".
So comedians are not always sad at the Oscars. They may not get critical acclaim for their comedy, but they have gotten awarded for stepping outside their comfort zone.
