Why You Should Read Awful Books
October 22nd 2008 12:22
If you want to learn to write well, reread all of the books you hated!
Why? Because analyzing the books you hated is far more fruitful than analyzing the books you enjoyed.
Write down the reasons you hated the book. Which parts were boring? How could you have spiced them up? Was the story predictable? How could you have remedied that? Were the characters believable? How could you have made them more human?
Studying the books you hated can teach you more about writing than any writing course!

Writer's Notes
While it's not necessarily an easy thing to do, studying the books we hate can help us learn through other writers' mistakes, prevent us from making the same ones, and ultimately improve our writing.
Thanks for a new twist on using reading to improve our writing!
