Why I tend to avoid most creative people
February 1st 2012 04:22
I like to read, write and draw. So most people would agree that I am something of a creative person. You would think that being the this type would make me more inclined to hang around other creative people, wouldn't you? Well you'd be wrong. In fact I distance myself from most creative people. Let me elaborate on the "why" of my philosophy.
I was sitting on a tram once on my way to work. Towards the back of the tram were a group of musso type girls. They were all talking quite loudly. One of them was explaining to the others about how, she was trying to get more money out of Centrelink ( Welfare Office in Australia). I've seen this girl around and now that she is studying an arts degree in order to become a singer. She goes on to explain about how the people who work at Centrelink don't seem to like their jobs. She also observes how everyone at Centerlink seems to be unhappy with thier job. Centrelink declined her offer. She finishes her story with the following sentence: "I'm so glad I'm studying to be something. Thank God, I have other ambitions"
Really lady?, You don't think the people who work at Centrelink once had other hopes and dreams for their life? Do you have any idea how competitive the arts community is in this world? How many people go off to make a successful career out of their art? Not many that's for sure. What makes you think that your so special? What makes you think that you're going to get in when so many people don't?
I have never wanted to slap someone so hard in my entire life.
I love how some creative types think the world owes them a big favour. These people often worry about where their next cappuccino is coming from. Some of them go out of their way to mark themselves out as creative people. I used to know one person who fancied himself a writer. He would dress in nothing but black. He wasn't a goth mind you. He would dress in normal clothes. They would just be black.
I can remember once, I went to a retreat. It was on a farm. The whole thing was supposed to be about bringing creative types together for a stimulating day out. In actually fact it was sheer hell. The whole time was spent listening to complete morons gripe about how competitive the entire literary world was. They also tended to try and push their extreme left wing ideals down everyone's throat. For example: Did you know tobacco is actually good for you?. That's right it is!!! Don't worry about those horrifying videos of lab mice developing cancerous sores after being painted with tobacco paste. No, it's because those evil corporations put something in the tobacco to make it dangerous. Wow, I guess some people really are delusional.
The conversations of the day tended to be around environmental issues. Trust me with these people it is an obsession. Even a glass of organic milk was better for me because it had cosmic energies of the earth in it. By the end of the day I felt like setting fire to a rain forest, shooting a panda and snacking on a baby seal steak. To make it worse, there was even one guy there who dressed in black. He was telling us about a book he was writing. The book was about cats killing people. Kind of like an organization of serial killing cats, running around killing people. In one scene, a cat runs up to it's victim and jump's on him. Sinking a claw into the victim's skin, the cat makes a vertical cut in the person. This cut runs from the top of their head to the bottom of their waist. The victim then proceeds to split like a sausage.
An editor he sent this into critisies him about this part. She says that anyone who can come up with that kind of death scene is seriously sick.
He later goes gripes that the main reason no one wants to publish any of his work is because they don't want to read a page and think about it.
I told a group of people about all my creative hobbies and interests. To which one of them replied: "Multiple streams of consciousness man"
Total moron.
I have never understood why some people go to university and commence an arts degree. When questioned on their motivations, the reply is always the same: "All I've ever wanted to do with my life is draw/write/paint ect ect..."
Do people just enjoy wasting your money? You really want to draw?. Get a pencil, get some paper and start drawing. You really want to paint?. Get a paint brush, get some canvas and start painting. Why do you need a university degree to teach you how to do that?. What is 3 years of university going to teach you that real life can't.
As I writer, or any artist mind you, you must have experiences. These experiences let you relate to people. These experiences let other people relate to your work. What kind of experiences can you have if you just sit around all day smoking and drinking cappuccinos in a cafe? You will only be able have deep meaningful thoughts about being unemployed.
My biggest advice to a struggling young artist?, GET A JOB!!!!!!!
