Why accessories will be the bane of your existence

August 28th 2008 14:14

Needless to say that you've heard that gone and dusted is the reign of 'it' bags, it's all about accessories. Necklaces, chunky bangles, brooches and beanies and flashy earrings are all the go now. Other than the obvious benefit that accessories add an extra pizazz to your outfit, what's all the rage about?

Reasons why accessories will be the bane of your existence

1) That plain, boring, old top you have will transform into a staple fashion item, as it allows you to wear the flashiest of jewellery without looking OTT.

2) Accessories can be economical. We've all sworn ourselves to bouts of non-shopping, but now instead of feeling awfully guilty about giving into temptation and buying an overpriced dress, you can instead spend a couple of measly dollars on buying a cute necklace.

3) You can wear all those pieces of jewellery which were once condemned to lie at the bottom of your jewellery box. This point particularly makes me happy! My wonderful Auntie kindly gave me all her old clip on earrings. They are decadent to say the least. But I was able to wear a pair of big, blue stone and gold earrings I had only pranced around in my room in, recently to a fashion show. It's all about using what you've already got, and making it work.

4) You can repeat your wardrobe over and over again without seeming like you slipped out of that terrible Bill Murray movie, Ground Hog Day. Instead of it being blaringly obvious that a) you haven't been bothered to piece together a new outfit or b) you have no time to dress day-by-day c) you have no clothes, just chuck on a bright resin bangle, or a linked chain necklace and everyone will be none-the-wiser.

How do I wear accessories?

Anyway you want darling! That's the wonderful thing about accessories, it truly gives an individual flair to your style. So its up to you how you wear it. But you can always improve how you wear jewellery, to get the most of its qualities.

Firstly, don't just pile it on. For a piece jewellery to be appreciated, you don't want to sharing around all the attention between too many pieces. Stick to one or two pieces max.

Also, if you have a piece of jewellery which is really attention grabbing, you might just want to wear it by itself. So if you've got a pair of stand-out earrings on, don't wear a necklace as well.

Don't be too matchy-matchy. Be adventurous and wear things that clash, but also *somehow* complement each other.

Who's leading the pack

One word: MARNI. No longer considered a mispelling of Mr Georgio's or Emporio's surname, Marni has secured itself as the go-to brand for accessories. Specialising in quirky, chunky and decorative accessories, the brand has made its statement on the runway by showing that jewellery doesn't have to be all about perfect pearls and diamonds.

Don't have a spare wad of 100 buck notes lying around to purchase some Marni love for yourself? Do not fear! Its influence has been so pronounced that just about every shop worth its coathangers has some similar (copied) styles. And for some local inspiration, look to the amazing brand Dinosour Designs. Well established here in Australia, and repected internationally, DD offers resin jewellery which is truly unique in its conception and finishing touches.

When do I start?

Ok, an entirely unneccessary question. But nevertheless. Start. Right. Now. Dammit!!
