When it all Turns to Custard, God Brings out the Ice Cream

My ex and I were getting comfortable. A year had now gone past and I asked Nancy if she wanted to remarry. I brought her an engagement ring. Then I had a panic attack, or call it cold feet I do not know which.
I asked the pastoral staff if they could pray over us as a couple as our relationship was getting serious. After the senior pastor prayed, my ex sold the engagement ring and flew to Christchurch. Picked up her boyfriend and came back to town with him.
She still came to church. Her family slowly dropped away one at a time. The boys wanted to sit with their mum in church but I was not happy about this. I explained to them that they could talk to her before and after church then during the fellowship breaks. They could spend time with her when she came to take them away but sadly, she never did.
Now I had nobody, just Jesus and me. Sometimes this is a good combination and for now, it suited me. I continued with bringing up my family. Each Saturday we still went to the hot springs that soon became a place of rest and solitude from the outside world.
Must have been a good 18 months and I got a call from some people at church. They had a bumper crop of cabbages and would I like some. Dinner was out of the way and it was an early Friday evening. I decided to take the kids along for a drive. Together we went to collect our free cabbage.
At the house who should pull up in front of me but Hine. She had been to a family reunion up north and was on her way back to Wellington. Her spiritual parents had the cabbage patch. We stood and started talking. Soon it was dark and the streetlights came on. Both of us were firmly rooted to the spot. We swapped addresses and telephone numbers. After that, it was all on.
