Whats wrong with the world?
November 27th 2006 02:42
I was on yahoo answers some time ago and someone asked the question "Do you fear the way the world is heading?" I couldn't resist answering. It may seem like a rehash of stuff that I've spoken about before but you must understand that I'm a little rusty where my writing is concerned so forgive me for reprinting old stuff. My answer is reprinted below with some new thoughts added in.
As long as we progress toward relative moralism then we don't have a hope. I'm sorry but It disturbs me that the more we talk about freedom the less of it there is. When someone else wants freedom to do what ever it is they feel they want to do the rest of us who don't necessarily believe they have the right to do so have to squeeze up in the "bus of freedom" to make room.
Parents can no longer discipline their children, children have been given excessive rights that they wield over their parents heads like an axe, preachers can no longer sermonize against what they see as sin for fear of being put in prison for inciting hatred, teachers can't mark with red pens or tell students they've failed because it may damage their self esteem and children aren't allowed to play tag at school because of fear of litigation. Christianity gets squeezed into a corner as Santa and the easter bunny become the reasons for the seasons. People can no longer say "Merry Christmas" for fear of offending somebody of another faith but civil libertarians are willing to fight to the death for any other religion except for our own.
In years to come, since everybody now has a right to have rights, I wonder who's next to claim for their piece of the pie - murderers? pedophiles? extreme right wing zenophobes? Trekkies?
These days nobody has a correct name for anybody or anything just euphemisms. Nobodys bald or short anymore they're either follically or vertically challenged. People aren't blind they're visually impaired, nobody gets old anymore they move into senior citizenship. Apparently there are no stupid people either they've been upgraded to become mentally slow.
We also now live in a world of irresponsibility where we love to blame others for our own mistakes. If you smoke, you increase your chance of getting cancer so what do you do? You sue the tobacco industry. If you eat too much fast food, you then try and blame the fast food company for making you fat and sue said company. Nobody ever forced anybody to go into a fast food chain everyday and eat burgers, fries and soft drinks. In fact what these peole have done is actually help out the fast food companies by patronizing them and putting money in their pockets that would be used to fight against them in court. How ironic. The people who sue are suing to get their own money back.
We have kids who have been raised on a constant media diet of a sexualized pop culture who then have kids before their time and then we wonder where we as a society went wrong? Who are we kidding? We have singers who prance around half naked who are promoted as idols to millions of young kids and we don't expect our kids to do the same? The latest fad for young peole across the US is this whole bumping and grinding at dances almost like simulated sex. Is this what we want for our children and young people? There's been this discussion that listening too much to raunchy music can cause young people to start having sex. I don't totally agree and for this reason...it comes from a segment of the society that says "It's okay to have sex whenever with whomever." The whole media has to take the rap for this. You can't watch anything or listen to anything without seeing something sexual.
I unfortunately have no panacea to any of this, but all I can say is hold on, enjoy the ride as interesting as it is now cos it's gonna get bumpy if not downright dangerous over the next few years.
