What's Missing

May 10th 2009 00:49
Something occured to me earlier today. I browse different sites for news and happenings on different websites. Wimp.com is one of them, they have some interesting videos. One in particular brought me back to my childhood. It was a video of the old Abbot and Costello routine "Who's on first". Now if you have seen it, well I needn't say more, but if you have not, take a few minutes and google it. It is just good old fashion funny and it truly is timeless.

That isn't my little epiphany but it led to it. I showed my son and he really enjoyed it. When my wife arrived home that evening we all watched it again. I saw another Abbot and Costello video and started looking at some others. One was the old show, 1956 to be exact, "This is Your Life" Lou Costello. We ended up watching it and it was really good, even with the poor video quality and sound.

When it was over I said to my wife, you know this is what's missing in our world today. There aren't any shows like that anymore. There are reality shows up the ying yang, competition shows and all kinds of police based shows. I really can't even articulate what it is that is so different about TV these days. Maybe the word wholesome is whats missing?

What is it? What do you think is missing today or is it just me being nostalgic?

I think the world could do with a lot more wholesome viewing these days. I quite like the old musicals because even though they're just so sickening sweet sometimes, they do provide escape from the realities and ugliness of everyday living. I think that sometimes the movies and TVs shows we watch should just be pure escapism - rather than the real gritty stuff.

And although it was a pretty annoying to see every family on TV being the typical nuclear family, where people make mistakes and then everything gets fixed up with a nice big hug at the end, at least it did show some people making good choices and it was wholesome. I think we could do with a bit more of that too.
