What song sums up your life so far?
I was in the car tonight on the way home with the radio cranked up high singing away to "Chasing Cars" yet again (can you get enough of that song? I know I can`t!) and I suddenly thought I seem to have a song that relates to so many memories I have.
"Take that ribbon from your hair", "Tub-thumping", "A-la-la-la-la long","Kiss me", "Africa" ... the list goes on and it made me realise the importance of music in our lives.
An innocent thing like driving home and listening to the radio tonight led to so many Flashes of Memories I came home and immediatley set about making a CD with all these 'memory' songs on to listen to in the future.
Last year we spread my fathers ashes and a load of family from overseas came over for a family reunion sort of thing at the same time. My uncle made a CD of all the songs that were relevant to the trip and it was such a great gesture we decided to make one every time we all get together in the future. (The Christmas 2006 one will be in all good music stores January 12th!
)
The song that will always stand out the most to me is "The living years" from Mike and the Mechanics, also my chosen one for the trip. If you have never heard this song before I suggest you find it, borrow it, beg for it, ask your CD store to put it on for you....and listen to the words. In fact I will be so kind as to put them here for you to READ!:
Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door
I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid that's all we've got
You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye
So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that lasts
So Don't yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in
You may just be OK.
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye
I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It's too late when we die
To admit we don't see eye to eye

So what song is relevant to where you are now? Or what song stands out most to you, brings back a really vivid memory or relates to highly emotional (good or bad) experience you have had?
