Inside the mind of a superspy - by JaneJane

Part 9 - What next?

September 15th 2006 12:03
"This re-constructed tofu cake with salt sauce is fantastic Je,” La was enjoying his meal. “How do you manage to make food taste so good when we know we’ve already eaten it more than two hundred times?”

“Oh, La. You know I have two secrets – fifteen years of training in some of the best restaurants ever opened and a really accurate microwave oven,” she said with her usual smile.

Ru asked, “Why is it though, that when our urine is recycled into drinkable water it still tastes like urine?”

“You’ll have to ask the ship’s computer about that Ru, I don’t recycle the water by hand,” She said giggled. No one else got the joke.

“My water tastes fine,” remarked Hu.

Re was trying to get them to concentrate on a possible cause of the disintegration of the pipe on his space suit, “People, can we get back to the issue at hand?”

“Oh yes, what happened to the pipe?” remarked Ru. “The explanation is as simple as it looks. You came in to contact with an acidic substance. We must remember ot be careful should we ever need to go outside again and keep away from it, simple. Now, onto a more important matter, if it’s not too soon to ask, who’s going to take over the captain’s job? I think it should be you Re. You were Bo’s partner, you probably know more about captaining than any of us.”

“I couldn’t possibly,” said Re.

“Oh, no,” interjected La. “Ru, you are certainly a born leader, you should be our captain.”

Ru smiled, “It’s not the job for me, why don’t you take it?”

“You know I’m more of a leader of spirits than of people. I am here to give guidance for your souls and your psyche. Someone else will have to lead your bodies.”

‘It would be hard enough to lead your own body around,’ Re almost said out loud.

“I don’t think,” continued La, “you or Re should be captain, neither of you want’s the ruddy position. I don’t want it either so that means the job should go to either Je or Hu.”

“Oh not me,” Je piped up, “I haven’t got time to microwave and lead. It’ll have to be you Hu.”

“Oh, joy, given the role of leader, not because I’ve got the necessary characteristics, qualifications and desires, but because I was the last to say I didn’t want it.”

“Good!” Ru slapped the table. “That’s settled. We have a new captain. So, captain, what will we do now?”

Everyone looked to her.

“Ok, we’ve crashed. From what we know there are no breaches of the external hull, our infinite energy supply is in tact and we’ve been living on recycled food for so long now it doesn’t look like we’re going to need to get supplies in a hurry. This leaves is in a pretty good position. We’re very lucky.”

“But what about our mission?” asked Je. “Can we achieve our desire to be alone in the universe and practice our theories of love and solitude?”

Re answered first, “I don’t think so. We’ve lost Bo, there’s something out there that can potentially eat through our space suits. I think we should get off this planet and head back to ‘The Cream For All’. We don’t belong here, it’s too dangerous and we should have never come.”

“Nonsense,” Ru scoffed. “We’re perfectly safe. We’ve got unlimited supplies. We’re on a primitive planet where no one will ever find us and our home planet has been destroyed. Why go back when this is the perfect place to start over?”

“I agree with you Ru,” said Je. “What do you think Captain?”

Hu took a moment to realise she was being addressed, “We have two options, one is to stay and try to achieve what we want, the other is to leave and go back home and achieve nothing. It seems pretty obvious to me that we have only one choice. We must stay.

She turned to La, “Do you have any concerns about our spirituality if we stay here?”

“No, certainly not, we are very much alone. I doubt anyone from our galaxy could find us. I doubt very much that anyone is even looking! We have no reason to leave the ship, we are secure and we can begin out lives of worship and contemplation any time. There is no reason to leave. Being wedged into the dirt of this planet is as good a place as any to begin anew.”

“I guess it’s settled then,” said Hu. “We will stay here; remain in the ship and worship love and peaceful solitude until we are all dead.”

“Sounds peachy,” muttered Re, but no one heard, they were too busy cheering Hu.
