Ramble On - Or How I Get Through This Life

What is your Favorite One-hit-Wonder Song?

June 13th 2007 02:23
David at Mind Orgasms asked this question of me today

"Why don't you ask Bloggers in your title what their favourite one-hit-wonder song is?"

I thought is was a great idea.....

So what say you?

It's going to take me a bit of time to narrow it down to a final selection.

So far, I've got three contenders:

1. MacArthur Park (by Jimmy Web) sung by RIchard Harris & Donna Summer. (I'm pretty sure I'll end up going for this one. It's one of my all-time favourite songs).

2. Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers (They are probably not one-hit wonders, but it's the only song I know by them).

3. Gotta Lotta Love by Ice-T.

2. Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers (They are probably not one-hit wonders, but it's the only song I know by them). They had many hits but this counts if they are a one hit wonder to you. I can never hear this song without remembering that scene in the movie "Ghost"....

3. Gotta Lotta Love by Ice-T. Bold choice my friend! Need to add it to the iPod

Thanks for playing in my yard!

The only thing i can think of right now is "How Bizzar!" My kids and i use to sing it all the time. Not sure who it was by. Something about, "Everytime i look around..... it's in my face" how bizzar, how bizzar, how bizzar

i know there are better ones then this but i can't think of them right now. AHHHH!! They are on the tip of my mind. "Great question!!"

MIs,

What a fun post.. it'll also take me time to narrow it down to my all time ..let's say 'few' favs...

First up: off the top of my head...

Flash In The Pan - Hey St Peter.
MacArthur Park - as Above.

and at the time... My Sharona by the Knack...

I'll be back with more, I'm sure of it...

Ice-T's 'Gotta Lotta Love' is so cynical and satricial in its tone and lyrics. I used to listen to it over-and-over again without knowing who Ice-T was. Then he pops up as a long-term actor on Law & Order? I can't stand rap, but there's just something about this song. Whenever I see him on Law & Order, I just think, Dude. That's it. I still to this day wonder whether he follows the script or just improvises his lines.

But I'll go with MacArthur Park as my final choice. I just love that song. It's so silly on the surface yet so full of serious subtext.

That song is actually called "How Bizarre" and was sung by the group OMC. Great choice...very catchy...can't get it out of my head now....hahaha

i know there are better ones then this but i can't think of them right now. AHHHH!! If you think of any more stop back by...

Spirit in the Sky
I wonder what 'ol Norman Greenbaum is up to these days? I wonder if he even remembers recording this song? Legend tells that he was quite the "experimenter."

Whip It Love that video still to this day...especially the cig and whip scene.

Groove is in the Heart (thrashed it)
Loved Deelite and dressed like them for a while.....kind of sad...but I totally worked it

99 Luftballons
Wonder what Nena is doing these days/ probably looks like the rest of of middle aged women... wonder if her hair is still big?

there have been some pretty good ones mentioned so far, some i would even consider myself. but no one has thought of the all time, flash in the pan, goliath one hit wonders. i ran (so far away) by flock of seagulls. not only did they have the coolest synth sound in the 80s world, they backed it up with craziest mod looking hairstyles. gold.

apart from that i would have to say that band that the guy from the office was in. i don't know the name of it, but it was like a really bad bowie rip off.

US3 - "Cantaloop" Oh...reminds me of all the brain cells I lost listening and drinking to this song while chilling

Dexy's Midnight Runners - "Come on Eileen" This seems to be the crowd favorite... Hopefully you wear shoes with your overalls...but maybe not....

Jesus Jones - "Right Here Right Now" I burned up that CD...and also the Doubt CD. "International Bright Young Thing" was a great song also...definitely not a hit though

3rd Bass - "Pop Goes the Weasel"
HAHAHA ...I had forgotten about that one
Pop goes the weasel ...cause the weasel goes pop!

The Buggles - "Video Killed the Radio Star"

There's a lot of songs that haven't made the list that come to mind. I won't mention heaps, but there's a just a few. I'll include some Australian ones you might not be aware of. (some of the bands had other hits, but most people will remember them by these ones).

Cocaine. J.J. Cale.

Ben. Michael Jackson (sorry about that, couldn't resist).

Evie (Parts 1,2,& 3). Stevie Wright. (An absolute classic of Australian Rock).

Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy. Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs.

Give Me Head. The Radiators.

I Was Only Nineteen. Redgum.

Up There Cazaly. Mike Brady.

Australiana. Austen Tayshus.

(This wasn't really a song. it was just a comedian speaking, but they cut it as a record, and it stayed at number #1 in the Popular Music Charts for weeks and weeks and weeks, so I guess it qualifies. It's just a play on words. Things like "Great Barry. A Reefer." instead of the Great Barrier Reef, and it ends with. Don't let them lead you 'astay Leanna').

Down Under. Men at Work.

Eagle Rock. Daddy Cool. (They were not one-hit-wonders, but I reckon you'd like this one).

Jon, you're musical taste is impeccable - "I Ran" is probably the best ever chintzy 80s song. For the record, Ricky Gervais' group was called Seona Dancing - the track is all over YouTube. Though I'd hardly call it a hit!

I'm a big fan of one-hit wonders. So I have a couple choices here.

Firstly though I must say to Bo and Aimster - Dudes Aha weren't one hit wonders. They released something like 18 albums.....I have 3 of them (admitting that isn't helping my credibility is it? Oh well!). hahahaha.

This is my pick for Best One Hit Wonder of All Time

But other ones worth mentioning are:

Tainted Love by Soft Cell

I've Never Been To Me by Charlene

acdc, cold chisel and one hit wonder just don't work together in the same sentence. acdc, well everyone should know that, but cold chisel might be mistaken for a one hit wonder as i'm not sure how big they were overseas. but as an aussie i must defend my honor here and say they are far from a one hit wonder band.

AC/DC is an Aussie group, aren't they?

Anyhow, if you wanna look deeper into Chisel, check out Khe Sanh, Cheap Wine, Flame Trees, and You Got Nothing I Want.

Thanks for the suggestions.... great to see you again!

KylieW - OMG, I thought I was the only one with more than one A-HA album! I didn't think A-HA was a one hit wonder until I bought a One-Hit-Wonder CD and they were on it.

MiS- wasn't Morten a dream? Even now at over 40, he still looks pretty hot!

Hey, has anyone mentioned DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY???

The only one that springs to mind is "Australiana" by Austen Tayshus - provided anyone can remember back that far!

Did a similar post a while back - so where do I start?

Patrick Hernandez - Born to Be Alive, The Knack - My Sharona, Beach Baby - First Class, Hot Summer Night - Night, Turning Japanese - The Vapours, Steal Away - Robbie Dupre - gosh, so many names so many songs. Like a summer storm - these one hit wonders roll into our lives - cause tempest and excitement - then by morning - they're gone.

I love storms.

Cheers

I love Patrick Hernandez - Born to Be Alive, I had forgotten about it. I just put it on my iPod for my 80s grouping. Thanks for the reminder.

The Knack - My Sharona (One of my all time favorite bands....)

Beach Baby - First Class. I have the 45 of this recor. I bought it b/c First Class recorded it to "poke fun" at Beach Boys. Love it (another one for the iPod)

Hot Summer Night - Night I am familiar with the original by Walter Egan but not by Night. I have looked all around the net but will locate it.... oh yes I will!

Turning Japanese - The Vapours
This song got me in so much trouble. I taught my niece this song and she would perform it at the most inappropraite times and places. My sister was not amused.

Steal Away - Robbie Dupre
What a great song!

Like a summer storm - these one hit wonders roll into our lives - cause tempest and excitement - then by morning - they're gone.

Beautiful turn of phrase

I love storms.
Me too!

Thanks so much for stopping by! Enjoyed it very much!

I love one-hit wonders! They make up most of the songs on my ipod. My all-time favourite one hit wonder (altough I'm sure they were big in their home country Norway) is "Take on Me" by A-HA, simply because I fell in love with Morten Harket, the lead, in the video clip. *sigh*
----------------------------- ----------------------------- ------
I just wanted to add that a-ha might have been a one-hit-wonder in Australia but you wanna know something? A-ha still do exist and write music today!! The Norwegian lads' last album 'Analogue' came out in 2005 and just recently toured extensively for a few months throughout Norway.

A few weeks ago, a-ha had a free live concert in Keil, Germany which also was aired over the net! As I have never seen a-ha live in concert before (cos I live in Australia), this was my first a-ha concert! When I saw the boys come out on stage, my eye's filled with tears of joy as this was the next best thing to actually being there!

'I've been loosing you' at Kiel concert

'Take on Me' at Kiel concert

Throughout Europe and Brazil a-ha always remained popular! However Australia, UK and the US forgot a-ha exhisted after the 80's! I think it was a tough road for a-ha to be taken seriously mostly because of their good looks and bubble gum song 'Take on Me'. Really that was the way the record company 'Warner Brothers' sold a-ha to its audience. Deep down, that is not what the guys wanted. They wanted to create music that was much deeper than 'TOM' and they managed to do that when their second album 'Scoundrel Days' came out.

Anyway, for those who would like to find more about a-ha, you can visit their official site at:

a-ha.com

or visit:

West of the Moon

Cold As Stone

or my aussie/NZ forum
Sycamore Leaves
(meet other oz/nz fans)

if you google a-ha, you'll be just suprised how many websites are dedicated to a-ha ... hundreds and hundreds!!

Oh Mags runs his own myspace! You can find it at:
Magnef

Paul also has another band besides a-ha called 'Savoy'. His wife Lauren Savoy runs their myspace:

Morten still looks hot at 48!
