Ramble On - Or How I Get Through This Life

What is Your Favorite Movie Soundtrack?

June 28th 2007 02:13

The Motion Picture industry realizes that a movie soundtrack is important as well as the plot of the movie. Most movies contain a soundtrack which represents a vital part of a film and is considered to play an essential role in creating the mood in the film. If a soundtrack suits the movie perfectly; it can become even more popular than the movie itself. Releasing songs from a soundtrack can be a great promotion for a movie; and can help make a movie popular long before the premier. Sometimes I will go to the theatre to see a movie, and then decide to buy soundtrack (especially if I liked the movie and the soundtrack in tandem.)

My Top Ten Soundtracks (not in any particular order)

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Almost Famous

Blues Brothers

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion

Pulp Fiction

Garden State

Grosse Point Blank

Grease

The Graduate

I'll have to come back and have a good listen.

In the meantime, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers [ I let you off Sound of Music, again]

You never know, after listening, I may change my mind.

Another is Don Quixote, I am a balletophile.

Oh some great choices there!!!

Another couple soundtracks I loved are:

- About a Boy - all songs done by Badly Drawn Boy
- Magnolia - hated that movie with a passion, but Amy Mann's soundtrack is divine
- Good Morning Vietnam is a great one too
- Footloose - yeah Kenny Loggins!!!
- The Breakfast Club - okay, I'll leave the 80's alone now

I'm sure I'll be back when I think of others!

From one balletophile to another.... the
Sound of Music soundtrack would be number 11 on my list.

I'll have to come back and have a good listen.

Please come back....
You never know, after listening, I may change my mind.
All righty then!

I had the pleasure to see them live. It was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. It was held in a small college auditorium with less than 500 audience members. We were sitting on the aisle and John and Dan both cartwheeled and danced down to us and chatted up their adoring fans. Very memorable.

Hi Miswanderlust,

I assume we are talking soundtracks compiled from lyrical songs, not original films scores. From that POV 10 great ones off the top of my head are-

American Graffiti
Things To Do In Denver When Your Dead
Boogie Nights
Dead Presidents
Dazed and Confused
Smokin Aces
The Crow
Lost Highway
Natural Born Killers
Pat Garret and Billy the Kid (Bob Dylan)

Hi Mis...

I love soundtracks!! I have so many.
I have many CDs of movie and TV themes and songs.

I'm with KW....'Footloose' and 'Good Morning Vietnam'!

But I also have on constant rotate 'Pulp Fiction', 'Blues Brothers' (family favourite) and -

'Forrest Gump' (great songs on this)

'Kill Bill Vol 1'

'Mortal Kombat'

...also have and love 'Heaven and Earth' (Kitaro) and 'The Dish' and 'Crouching tiger Hidden Dragon'

Desperately want all the Austin Powers soundtracks.

...and....my guilty pleasure...

'Grease 2'....

So shoot me.

Wow, how do I pick? Dirty Dancing, Rent (but that's only because I like the musical), Breakfast Club. Also I'm a fan of 'classical' scores - I love listening to the LOTR soundtracks and I can listen to Gladiator again and again and again...

Blues Brothers is a great choice, of course. I used to do a BB routine with a high school friend of mine, so I may be a bit biased towards that choice. So instead of going with that one, I'm going to put an odd selection out there and say that I really dig the soundtrack for Donnie Darko....

Mis

Paris Texas (Ry Cooder)

Night on Earth (Tom Waits)

The Sound of One Hand Clapping (some Tasmanian composer)

The Mission (someone)

Psycho (someone else)

Cape Fear (somebody besides someone else)

Blue Velvet (Candy Coloured Clown is a classic). [It's one of the few films I don't mind someone bursting out into song in]. As for musicals? Joe Jackson summed it up best. "Don't call me a faggot unless you are a friend."

Taxi Driver

I generally don't like soundtracks with lyrics overlapping the screen images. Lyrics are suggestive of images. If the lyrics contradict the image on the screen? What image does your mind go with? The one in the song or the one on the screen. Oh, shit, I forgot. People leave their brains behind.

Genuine broadway celuloid aside - can't believe Saturday Night Fever, The Big Chill, for that matter A Hard Days Night (there's one from left field) didn't get a look in. Though Grease and Blues Bros are great.

Nice, succinct and (thought provoking) post.

I don't really remember soundtracks made up of previously existing songs ... Sure, there are some great compilations, but the ones that stick with me are the scores composed specifically for a movie.

Here's my top ten ... in a semblence of order.

1. Blade Runner ~ Vangelis
2. sex, lies and videotape ~ Cliff Martinez
3. Betty Blue - Gabriel Yared
4. Star Wars - John Williams
5. Diva - Vladimir Cosma
6. Three Colours Blue - Zbigniew Preisner
7. Three Colours White - Zbigniew Preisner
8. Paris, Texas - Ry Cooder
9. Halloween - John Carpenter
10. Cat People - Giorgio Moroder

Aww many of mine have been taken already,

I loved Blues Brothers, Grease, Footlose and Flashdance, Saturday Night Fever when I was very much younger.

For a while I played Bridget Jones to death. *lol*

Ned Kelly, (recent version)...
Man From Snowy River
Star Wars
The Mission, (haunting melodies).
Love Actually,
Tarzan (Phil Collins),
There’s a song at the end of Proof of Life that I just adore, don’t know who it’s by.
The Matrix (most of it) some is a bit ...um... too much for my head. *chuckle*

There are so many, one-off movie songs like that; including the theme song from the cartoon Anastasia.

My teenager got me onto Charlies Angels, which wasn't bad (for a while) *rolling eyes*

…and I have to add the Shrek collection 1, 2 and now (getting it soon) Shrek the Third…and also recently the big Australian hit play Menopause *hilarious*

Music is always so dependent on our moods, isn’t it? I find my own taste so varied depending on the phases of the moon.

Pulp Fiction is pretty good, but I don’t have it in my collection.

There are many more, but I just haven’t got time to check the cupboard…will come back later ..

Ha ha, this one got me thinking, too.
Lilla …
