What is being an artist really?

August 27th 2007 06:45

Some people that being an artist is a status: if you did the right studies and you have an art diploma then you are an artist. Others believe that you are an artist if you have an audience or you are exposed somewhere. Is that what being an artist means?

Well I hope not..... When I hear sometimes some lacking of talent people that are singing or on TV because of their money or because they look sexy, I don’t really categorise them as artists.

Why would they be seen as artists when others are not recognised at all but have in my opinion real talent? I remember when I was in Paris, entering the metro and hearing this incredibly Chrystal clear voice singing. I was so surprised of the gift that this young gal had. And she was there singing in the metro to get few coins to live, while others are on radio with half her voice. Isn’t she an artist? Isn’t been an artist just a state? Like something you were born with?

I don’t know if it is true but I always thought so, more accurately I always felt so.
I don’t know really if I can qualify myself really as an artist but I always felt an artistic soul in me, and even if I never get my paintings exposed somewhere, my poetry printed or my songs in the radio, I will always feel this way.

I just see the world differently. I see the light and the colours that my friends don’t see. I stop to look at this tree in flower that nobody notices, take the picture of this weird plant and they all think I’m crazy. But when they see it after they would have never thought it would look that way.

Isn’t that been an artist? Seing the world in a different way? Recreating it your own way? Bringing new colours and new words to describe it? Isn’t it just feeling this need to sing in your own words, writing these ideas that you have no clue where they come from? Immortalising this perfect instant, tree, flower, and animal you saw?

Or is just about fame and recognition? Can we really resume what is been an artist in this only pathetic definition? Or any other?

How many great and recognized artists today were starving and ignored in their time? Nobody wanted their work, the same paiting that are hunged in our museums today or sold for millions and millions.
Among them we can quote: Gauguin, Van Gogh and so many others.
And today as we speak there are probably very talented people who didn’t get the right fairy that blessed them when they were born and guided them.

So if you feel it deep inside, that you are an artist, just go for it and don’t necessary wait for the recognition it doesn’t always come but you have to do what you like and hopefully when day, the all Sydney, Paris, London or new York will talk about your last creation!
