What is a Dunk?

A lot of noise is being made over Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffins dunk on Kendrick Perkins of Oklahoma City. It was good, but my question is, 'What is a dunk?' What is the difference between actually dunking and getting the ball in the basket?
I think a dunk is when a player stuffs the ball into the hoop and his hand actually goes inside the rim. If the hand comes off of the ball before it goes into the rim then it is not a dunk. Even if his hand touches the rim on follow through it is not a dunk to me if he loses the ball first.
In my humble opinion, I think that Griffin's basket was great, but not a dunk. Sure, he covered a lot of ground from his leap to the basket. But the ball is clearly coming out of his hand on the way down. I would almost call it a vicious hook shot in which he hit the rim on the way down.
Of course, the dunk is already on Youtube and being hailed by the talking heads as one of the best. This is the age we live in. But I wouldn't even put it in Griffin's top ten.
To me a dunk is what Philadelphia 76er legend Julius 'Dr. J' Erving did to the Lakers Michael Cooper. A one handed windmill where his whole hand damn near tore down the rim. Or the Bulls Michael Jordan going baseline on the Knicks Patrick Ewing. Not to mention the Knicks John Starks left handed stuff on Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Bill Walton of the Blazers threw one down on Kareem in the 1977 playoffs as well.
Call me old school. I am. But to me a dunk has to finish with the hand in the rim before the ball is released.
That's what a dunk is to me.
