What did you do in the military, dad?

All veterans need to contemplate the question because it is coming one day, in some form or fashion. Be prepared! I recommend for combat veterans to be especially mindful of the answers associated with the question. How do you candy-coat the answer while being as truthful as need be? My son asked me during a conversation somewhat unrelated to the topic. I was unprepared and had not considered ever really having to answer for my actions in combat.
Keep in mind that our estrangement for many years didn't help. I was perplexed as to how much to share, if to share at all. Finding the middle ground was important. I did not want to be to evasive and erode any trust we'd developed, but I didn't feel the need to blurt out all the gore either. You know your children, and are able to determine what amount to share and how much detail they can handle.
Start think about your response today. The question is coming to a theater near you soon!
