What book are you currently reading

I'm reading The Meaning of the 21st Century by James Martin. I'm loving it so far, it's kind of like a problem solver's approach to the near future. The first section (which is where I am up to) looks at what the key problems will be in the comming years, the combined consequences of depleting our natural resources and altering climate, drastically increasing population in the poorest and worst managed areas of the globe, and a drastic increase in the number of people who will try to lead a western lifestyle, what this will mean for the status of humanity, especially in terms of availability of food and drinking water. The second section looks at the technologies which will play key roles in transforming humanity and how they might help us avert crisis or get through it, including nanotechnology, radical genetic modification, evolutionary AI. The third section looks at the philosophies and theories which might play a role in getting us through or averting crisis, what social, political and economic structures will play a role. The fourth deals with what possible outcomes might be, from utopia to the end of humanityand a host of other possibilities in between.

Okay, well I'm reading a book called "When Christ and his saints slept" by Sharon Penman. It's a historical noval about King Stephen of England and his fight for the kingdom.

Sharon Penman is a damn fine writer.

I'm readin "The China Threat: Perceptions, Myths and Reality". It's an edited collection of essays on the topic. Insightful.

I also have been flicking through Blogging for Dummies Norm.

I'm reading lightish stuff at the moment, it's called Two Sisters by Anna Maxted. But I'm also in the middle of a trillion other more meaningful that I can't remember at the moment. Ah yes, Steppenwolf by Herman Hess, it's fantastic.

I'm reading a couple of books at the moment:

Lean Mean 13 by Janet Evanovich - I love that book series.

Magicians End Game by David Eddings - the last book in my favourite ever series of fantasty books. I decided I needed to re-read the whole series

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - okay, so I read it last week when it came out, but I needed to read it again.

And there's a couple trashy romances as well that I'm reading. I'm an insomniac, so I always have a number of books laying around my bed to read when I'm supposed to be sleeping!

Kylie, you sound like me. I have a book for night-time reading, usually light and enjoyable and then different books for different times of the day...that's why I end up reading about 5 books at a time. I just can't read anyhthing too stimulating before bed as my dreams go beserk! I haven't tried anything by Janet Evanovich but I've heard she's very good.

Interesting post, Denergo.

Oh my gosh! comments on my blog! thanks for your responses guys.

I've been trying to get into reading more than one book at a time, but I'm not sure if its for me. I had the idea of reading one fiction and one non-fiction, so my fiction book currently is Dharma Bums, but I'm only at the very beginning. I also am still finishing off Dennett's Sweet Dreams, where he proves once again that he has such clarity and level-headedness that makes most other contemporary philosophers look like they are just monkeying around with fanciful views on irrelevant thought experiments

I wish I had your problem Denegro.

I've got about 5 books on the go, but trying to get through the China Threat first because I borrowed it from a lecturer. Sometimes I wish I was a speed reading expert, there's so much to read and learn and soooo little time!!!
