What are your travel disaster stories?
It does not take rocket science to figure out that I love to travel, in fact I think I may have Gypsy ancestors somewhere along the line. For me it is as important as breathing! I also have a rather magnetic attraction... to disasters, which makes for an interesting combination. Part of any travel is the actual journey. If you are heading overseas you are more than likely going to use planes (although for a rather adventurous alternative check out this post). Chances are your flight will be smooth gliding all the way, a few turbulents here and there and maybe a frustrating wait in an Immigration line or two.
For me? Nah! Wishful thinking. The first flight that i had which was a little adventurous was flying home from South Africa once. I think we either had a kamakazee pilot who decided at the last minute that living was not such a bad option or he looked out the window and went, 'Oh dear there`s the airport, nearly missed it that time Joe!' One minute everything was going great the next we felt like we were in a nose dive. I think I left scratch marks in the arm rest of the chair I clung on so tight.
Next was on my surprise return trip home from London. I was meant to arrive at the front door without anyone knowing I was coming home. The flight had been booked about 3 months before and was I really looking forward to it. September 11th I was in the middle of London heading to get my plane ticket for my flight the next day when I heard on the radio in the bus that planes were crashing into the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and London was being put on alert for similar attacks. It did not really sink in until I saw the news that night and watched the actual footage of it. I knew that i had to get on one of those the next day and now there was the big decision of whether or not to fly.
Eventually I decided to and after a rather hectic check in and watching HUGE men with HUGE guns patrolling Heathrow I settled in for my 11 hours of panic flying. Flying over the middle of Africa we hit a major storm and the turbulents were like none I have ever felt before. I recall a friend saying to always look at the Air Stewards because if they look calm then you can feel calm. The guy was sitting gripping the chair worse than I was and had such a pained expression on his face I thought we had surely had it. At one stage an overhead locker came open and no one even got up to close it for fear of being flung across the cabin.
Last year I headed back to England. After a rather gruelling 42 hours to get there we were just coming in to land - I could actually see the people on the tarmac and the cars driving looked normal instead of ant size when suddenly the engines began to roar and we started to climb back up into the sky. Well! My blood ran cold, all my senses were on full alert and I was not sure whether to cry or pass out. After a terrifying ten mintues which saw us back in the queue circling the airport the pilot came over the loudspeaker to apologise, saying that the previous plane had not yet cleared the runway and he had to pull out of our landing.
The week before I left to come back to Australia was when the foiled terrorist plot was uncovered in London, involving the liquids. For the whole week leading up to my departure I had to think about getting on the plane and the very day that I was due to leave a plane was escorted back by fighter jets from Amsterdam after some funny business on board. Leaving Hong Kong there was a Typhoon warning with lots of flights being delayed to wait out the storm and a rather bumpy take off over what is already a rather scary airport (You fly over the sea to the airport which is basically an island!)
Does it deter me from travelling? Not really, I just thank the plane companies that they provide free alcohol on board and that airports provide a mutlitude of bars. So have you had any travel disasters? I am limiting this post to plane travel because otherwise we could be here for a while with the others I have had! Feel free to share your disaster stories.

Life is most certainly an adventure of the best kind.... gotta take the rough with the smooth for sure.
I love a little adventure - sometimes they can be a bit hairy and when they are actually happening I sure can do without them, but when all is said and done they do bring a bit of sparkle.

Look forward to hearing them! I had to have a little bit of a think too but I have reason for my post so was sifting through some old photos and got quickly reminded.

Yeah I restricted myself to flights on this post because we could be here for a while if I went into all of them.
I hear you on the fact that it most certainly is no fun at the time, especially when you are stranded somewhere. hhhmmmm that could be another post actually.... being stranded!
Glad to have a fellow disaster magnet along for the ride! Enjoy your trip to Queensland this weekend. It`s not sunny at the moment but hopefully it will be for your visit!

One time coming back from QLD after visiting Kmans family we were doing that big loop around Sydney airport. You could just tell the pilot was tired - everything was slightly rocky. Well, we get about 10 feet off the runway, utterly screaming down that tarmac, wheels down, when......
The entire plane, and wings, WIGGLES, know what I mean? Where the wings jiggle up and down. Im thinkin, OH SHIT, I look around and everyones still just chatting excitedly - not even Kman had clicked to what this meant.
Even 10 ft from the runway, after a screw up like that the pilot should have taken us out, gone around again, and set it down gently. You could literally hear the poor guy thinking - "We're SO close! Fuck it - we'll live" and just PLONKS it down! We all shot up out of our seats and everyones SCREAMING, and Im saying to Kman - "You didnt FEEL the plane wiggle like a goddamn worm? You didnt realize what that would MEAN?"
I was the only one on the whole plane that even noticed he almost threw the right wing into the goddamn tarmac! Then almost crashed us by over correcting and the left wing almost hit! No wonder he just plonked us down - we wouldnt have survived going up again!
I still hold this as an example of just how much I percieve compared to most people. No one noticed a thing until the tooth jarring, seat belt bruising impact!

Oh my word that sounds awful! I don`t blame you one bit for panicking. I also wonder how pther people manage to look so calm during these bumpy rides and wonder if I am overracting... but there are times when you know you aren`t!
Thanks for sharing!

My brother used to be a pilot before his heart surgery, so maybe I had inside information, but it all seemed common sense to me.

* Spending five days of my 7 day trip in Thailand hunched over the sink, slumped over the toilet and sprawled in bed from food poisoning.
* hubby having a seizure on the plane on the way back to Australia. We had to get off at Bangkok airport to find a doctor. With my hubby in a wheelchair, our passports seized by immigration and endless walks up and down escalators to find the doctor's office right outside the airport and while battling the flu, I had no idea what was going on and I was scared we were going to be in Bangkok indefinitely.
* getting detained for 2 hours at Heathrow Airport Immigration because an officer thought my hubby, in his winter coat, unshaven jaw, beanie and a backpack looked like a terrorist.
PS. You had some travel disasters, didn't you?
only real travel disaster I've ever had, was arriving at a destination I expected to stay at for a week, and discovering my luggage had been put on another plane...
A plane headed right back to where I had just come from!
LOL
Good read...
Take care,

At least you got your panic out the way and then got to watch it settle around everyone else. It`s amazing what some people miss isn`t it?
Your brother was apilot? Wow that`s pretty cool!

Wow! What experiences you have had. It`s easy to sit back and laugh about it when all is said and done but at the time it`s terrifying isn`t it?
Sadly with the threat of terrorism on our doorstep every day no chances are being taken. It certainly has made travel a little more interesting!
I hope the rest of your journeys a lot less dramatic and much more enjoyable!

Oh no! LOL I think that would be a gal`s dream come true... chance to get a new wardrobe. A friend of mine had that happen this year when he went overseas. His gold clubs came off the plane but his suitcase decided to take a journey all of its own.
