Whanganui Beckons

With the children spending more time with their parents, it was as they say all well. As we, both had grown up children in the North Island Hine and I felt that now was a good time to leave Invercargill. Both of us had built a close relationship with these grandchildren and felt to back of to enable this family time to meld.
Hine’s eldest son lived in Whanganui so we bunked in with him and his girlfriend discovering two more granddaughters in the process. This is also, where my wife was born. She had always told me that because Jesus was born in a stable she could identify with Him. Hine was born in a shearing shed. It is still standing and she pointed it out as we drove past.
We soon found a place of our own in a motel complex that had been converted into apartments. The beach was a stone throw away and we spent most days wandering along the waters edge. Eventually some part time kitchen work came available.
Then this restaurant in the centre of town advertised for a dishwasher and I got the job. It paid good money and the staff got fed well. Although I never really did get used to sitting on the backstairs to eat my meals. However, when the restaurant was quiet we were allowed in the dining room.
In the bar, the owner had set up in one corner a dancing table. It was old and scratched with people making full use of it. This also doubled as the staff area. During the filming of the “River Queen,’ Kiefer Sutherland and Cliff Curtis were regular visitors.
Because we move around quite a lot, our relationship with the Lord and his people tended to dwindle some. The upside on all this is we learned to feed ourselves. To read scripture on a daily basis requires discipline. With my track record, I truly believe it is a gift of God for me to be able to do this.
