Were The World Mine

Once in a while a movie comes along that I can't watch often enough. Were The World Mine is one of them. I think I've watched it ten times in the last fourteen days, but I could be wrong. It could be eleven times.

Based on the classic A Midsummers Nights Dream, by William Shakespear, Tom Gustafson - the films writer, director, and producer - has created a modern day twist on a literary classic, that leaves audiences with a smile on their face.

Timothy (Tanner Cohen) is an isolated gay teen in an all male private high school. He is secretly in love with "super jock" Jonathan (Nathaniel David Becker). Cast in the role of Puck in the senior play, Timothy discovers he has been given the instructions to create Cupid's Love Juice, and proceeds to do just that, creating Cupid's Pansy.

A slight accident with Max (Ricky Goldman) shows Timothy he has the ability to make Jonathan fall in love with him, and so he does, turning the rest of his classmates - and the bullish school rugby coach - gay in the process.

Were The World Mine is a sweet, fantasy, musical. The storyline is familiar to anyone who knows Shakespears A Midsummer's Nights Dream, with even the lyrics of the songs taken from the bards pages.

It is the cast of this film that make it so special. Tanner Cohen and Nathaniel David Becker as the lovers are wonderful, and come across as totally genuine in the roles. Timothy''s best friends Frankie and Max (Frankie is played perfectly by Zelda Williams) are well developed characters who aren't simply sidekicks to the main characters.

Broadway star Judy McLane as Timothy's mother is easy to relate to in the film, and the scene were she uses her wedding dress to make Puck's wings is really quite poignant.

The Academy's drama teacher Ms Tebbit seems to be the one the internet message boards are trying to decipher. I've read comments ranging from Ms Tebbit actually being Shakespear's wife, Tatianna or Shakespear himself. While there is definitely an air of mystery and magic about her, I think she was just the person Timothy needed at that juncture in his life to help him truly accept who he was.

Were The World Mine is a fantastic film that keeps the watcher entertained. It has to be my personal favourite of all the GLBT themed I've watched and I look forward to seeing what this extremely talented cast and crew do next.
