J. J.'s entertainment & travel stories - J. J.'s music and reviews

Welcome to J. J.'s music and reviews

January 28th 2007 18:04
Here you will find music reviews and comments. Some are of bands you may have heard of like Smashing Pumpkins and Shine Down. Others are bands you may not have heard of but I believe you should take a listen to.

I have worked for MTV Online and a variety of other online and off line publications. I have collected my reviews and will post the older one's along with the newer ones. There should be a new review posted daily.

The first review is posted below:
Getting all wet for Journey/ Def Leppard

I've been wet at a concert, but at Star Lake Post Gazette in Pittsburgh, Pa Wednesday for the Journey/ Def Leppard show it was like taking a two plus hour shower with good music. I had fun dancing around in the rain with my big heavey long midnight blue rain coat. I didn't get nearly as drenched as many other. The rain was off and on during Journey then in full force during Def Lepard.

The Journey/Def Lepard combination would have been better if Journey still had Steve Perry. The Lead singer for this tour, Jeff Scott Soto (maybe you would know his voice from the movie ROCK STAR if you heard him). The current lead singer is Steve Augeri who some say looks and sounds like Augeri is out on medical leave for a throat infection according to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_(band)#Band_members. He did good on the songs he sang, but the songs were missing that Perry touch. Perry wasn't the original lead singer, but a lot of the bands most successful songs were writtening during the time Perry was in the band between 1977-1987; 1996-1997. these songs include: "Don't Stop Believin'", "Any Way You Want It," "Open Arms", "Separate Ways" and "Wheel in the Sky". Maybe you know one or more of these songs and still enjoy hearing them from time to time.

This was the first time I saw Journey live. I could see why there were rumored conflicts between Neal Schon and Steve Perry. I had heard in the mid to late 80s their were ego and creative differences that were tearing the band apart. After watching this concert I believe I saw atleast one original band member that seemed to have a bit of an ego problem. Schon had prolonged guitar solos in several songswhich didn't need extra solos. Plus you should only take prolonged solos if how you is amazing or close to it. His playing is pretty average. Nothing different or original. He even opened the show on stage by himself performing the Starspankled Banner. Not the best randition I have heard, but not close to the worsed either.
Journey performed all their hits and a few tunes I was unformilar with. I especially liked drummer Deen Castronovo singing Faithfully. The background flashed pictures of him and his son and then other band members' photos and families over the years. It was a very nice touch.
Def Leppard was as entergizing as I remember. I saw them in concert when I was about 16. My Dad took me. I have always liked standing and enjoying the music at concerts. I remember my Dad telling me to sit down to consurve my energy so I wouldn't get to tired by the end of the show when the best songs are played. I loved all Def Leppard's song so it all was the best songs. I don't sit for my favorite bands and I can go all night if a concert last that long. This show was only four hours on my feet, so no problems start to finish even with the rain pouring.I don't think there has been a Def Leppard song I haven't liked. I knew every song in the set list other than a new one from their current album YEAH. some of my favorites include:"Bringin' on the Heartbreak" (Mara Carry should feel terrible for screwing up that song), "Rock of Ages", "Animal", "Love Bites", "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad", and "Two Steps Behind".
There didn't seem to be any huge egos here.Since I have liked this band since I first heard Photograph, the show felt like reminiscing with friends I haven't seen in awhile. B
