Water Restrictions - Our Water is as Rare as Gold - by Tracie Jarvis - The Power of Talk

car yards using all the water

November 23rd 2006 02:33
I’ve been thinking further on my frustration at the car yards washing the cars every day. In such an environment where it is so precious, this is a terribly irresponsible act. I think they should be responsible and change what they do. I’ve been looking at this from another perspective thinking it’s our fault too. We expect to see a car looking its best we don’t want to go to a car yard only to be presented with dirty cars. This certainly doesn’t highlight the vehicle, doesn’t help to sell it at all. But why do we do this? Why do we expect this from the car salesperson? This is even the case with a private sale. Not only do the car yards have to change their ways, but we, the general public also have to change our expectations. A car that isn’t washed everyday doesn’t drive any worse, doesn’t give lesser performance, mileage, economy, space or have any less accessories. The only difference is, the environment has been considered. We are the power, we can make the world change. We can stop the wastage or our gold. All we have to do is change our expectations, our ways. We have to take responsibility.

Have you ever passed by a car yard and noticed how shiny and sparkling clean all the cars are?
They are so luminous and dazzling, just inviting you to look further.
But then as you keep going, drifting back to the real world you remember how dirty your own vehicle - or a relatives, or a friends or neighbour - is and it still isn’t cleaned from the drought induced dust storm last week.
Now, as you think further about it you realize they must wash the cars every day because there is no way they can be this clean without doing so.

Well I’m here to tell you that yes, they do wash the cars every day, and they use our quickly diminishing natural resource – water!!

With all the council and state restrictions on household water usage, the car yards seem to be exempt from this. Each day they use litres and litres on every single car in their lot.

Australia is the 3rd highest consumer of water in the world, yet we are the driest inhabited continent in the world.

I want to start a petition or movement, whatever it takes to stop this blatant misuse of our precious resource.

We MUST become water conscious.
WATER IS OUR GOLD.
Why don’t we treat it that way?

Did you know the Australian Government even approves of us bottling and exporting our water?

I want to gather some figures to ensure we all have the correct information here, this is where is need your help.

How many car dealerships are there in Australia?
How many cars/vehicles are there in these dealerships?
What laws are they exempt from relating to water restrictions?
How many litres of water are used to wash a car?

Why do I want these statistics?

Let me give you some calculations using ‘made up’ figures; what if there were 20,000 dealerships in Australia with approximately 100 vehicles at any one time.
20,000 x 100 = 2,000,000 cars being washed every day
Now if these 2,000,000 used 100 litres of water per car, then 200,000,000litres of water every single day is being wasted just because Australian car yard insist on throwing our most precious resource away.

Great way to help our environment Australia!

And to add to the made up figures that 200,000,000 litres of water every day calculates to 73,000,000,000 each year. Any wonder our dams, natural rivers and other water catchments are running dry!

Please help save our country.

Give me more comments, photos of our dying country, statistics or anything else you can think of, no matter how small, your response to this will make it huge!!
