Water colour effect at camera

In case anyone starts frowning after shooting with their brand new Panasonic FZ8 compact semi-dSLR camera (those pro will know what I am saying), don't freak out and sell it off before reading this:

FZ8: Heat waves!

I vaguely remember a conversation about noise and noise reduction a while back (I don't remember about what camera, if it was a Panasonic or the H9 or what), that went like:
SOME DUDE: That's really horrible watercoloring! What a sucky sensor!
SOME OTHER DUDE: No it's not! It's, uh, heat waves!
FIRST DUDE: Riiiiight.
It can happen.
420mm equivalent, f/5.6, ISO 100, 1/320 second, ~60% crop
Taken in Huntsville, AL, a few days ago.
For those who don't know: warm air and cold air have different indices of refraction. Light going from one to the other will bend, just like light going from air to glass in a lens.
If you have warm air and cold air all mixed up, like when the wind blows over the hot ground railroad tracks (or, worse, the cars leave turbulent air behind them), you get random lensing of the light.
Hope that you all enjoyed this. I know I have learned something today. ^_^

Hahaha... I didn't thought of that though, but the age old optical cameras that processes funny shadows with faces still freaks me out.
The morden age, I think they are more digitally "modified"
Thanks so much for dropping by
