Watch WOLF CREEK on your TV
November 5th 2006 09:50
Three words to describe this flick. Disturbing, Realistic and Scary. Any horror film would be aiming for that kind of result I would imagine, but none half so successful.
As stated on the cover by James Wigney, "Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs, Max Cady from Cape Fear, Don Logan from Sexy Beast - now add Mick Taylor of truly great movie villains." I have to say I totally agree. Based on actual events, the inspiration for this movie stems from the alarming amount of people that go missing each year in Australia, estimated at 30, 000.
When watching any great horror movie, the following questions run through my head...
Who is the killer?
What is their agenda?
When will the killer strike?
Who will survive?
Who are the victims?
In the case of Wolf Creek, the victims are introduced immediately. The three backpackers Kristy (Kestie Morassi), Liz (Cassandra Magrath) and Ben (Nathan Phillips) are on their way to Cairns, but have decided to visit Wolf Creek on the way. Embarking from Broome, insight into the trio's personalities are introduced. Ben is the fun loving Aussie larikin who has a fascination with UFO's, Kristie and Liz both relaxed from their backpacking experiences are very easy going. Liz appears to be the more reserved of the two. Surprise, surprise there is also a little romance that appears.
John Jarrat has perfected the role of serial killer, Mick Taylor. Picking up stranded tourists from Wolf Creek, evidently many before the arrival of Kristy, Liz and Ben, he scouts his prey before he pounces. His entry is excellently timed as Ben has already instilled a sense of UFO fear into the girls, as all watches have stopped and their bargain bought car will not start.
Interestingly, Mick does not force his assistance on the group, but they willingly take it none the less, with much resistance given by Kristy. Any doubts of his agenda are distrurbingly entertained on the awakening of Liz and her attempts at saving Kristy.
Mick's agenda, is hard to comprehend for most sane viewers, however, like a cat pouncing on his prey, he enjoys the hunt, he enjoys the chase, he enjoys the torture and enjoys the killing.
The suspense though is largely focussed around the vitctims escape in the remainder of the film, where their attempts are both marvelous and frustrating to watch. Liz proves to be the warrior, while Kristy naturally freaks out, but proves strong in the end. Ben's tale is the last on screen and what happens is something you have to see on your TV.
