Was Grandmother Clark a Nazi ?

Was Grandmother Clark a Nazi?

I was curious why she printed a pattern for a Swastika rug in this book:

?

The Swastika once stood for life and good luck, but later it became known as a symbol for death and hate. This book was published in 1933.

I wonder what Grandmother Clark was thinking?

In any case, this rug wouldn't make a very nice welcome mat.

That's interesting. But you're right--it wouldn't make a good welcome mat!

maybe because, before hitler "stole" it, it was a symbol of good luck. A long, long time ago.

If Grandma used that symbol there is no doubt she was anti-Semitic, to say the least.

Yes, before Nazis turned the symbol to suit their needs, it was a nice symbol used by other cultures.

1933 tells the tale of ole Grandmother and her publisher - and of the people who bought such a book. <shudder>

2011 and anti-Semitism is still flourishing around the world, including the USA.

The swastika is a cross design that the Natzi party just picked as their symbol. It is a shame . It was a pretty cross. I had an antique quilt ( now stolen) that was made before WWII and it had black cloth with little white swastikas in the print.

Very interesting! If it was published 1933, then it was just some very unfortunate timing for grandma. The swastika was hijacked by the third reich around 1935, so I don't think grandma had any negative intentions given the time she must have written the pattern. It has both Navajo and Hindu history, but now it will never be recognized as anything else. Definitely wouldn't want to make this now!
