Warwick's Victorian Heritage

February 2nd 2012 17:07
Warwick is one of the UK’s top cultural destinations. With a strong link to its Victorian past, this town celebrates its roots with a variety of cultural and historical festivals and events.

Settled in the centre of England, Warwick is home to over 23,000 residents. As the cultural centre of its region, people travel from surrounding areas to join in the festivities during Warwick’s Victorian celebrations.

Warwick Victorian Evening
One of the most popular traditions in Warwick is the Warwick Victorian Evening, celebrating the town’s rich cultural history. Set in the backdrop of the town’s predominantly Georgian and Victorian buildings, due in large part to the devastating Fire of Warwick in 1694, the Warwick Victorian Evening is brought to life with costumes, decorations and delicious food. This evening of celebration and entertainment is held every year during the last week of November or the first week of December. The event treats guests to experience a steam carousel and horse and carriage rides. The evening is topped off with the cherished Christmas lights switch-on and a traditional carol service, marking the official start of the Christmas season.

Warwick Castle
Another iconic historical building in the area is the Warwick Castle. The castle was founded by William the Conqueror in 1068 and it has remained a recognisable feature of Warwick’s landscape ever since. Visitors to Warwick can enjoy the spooky side of the Warwick Castle, with daily ghost tours offered inside the castle walls. Alternatively, Dungeons after Dark: Dining at Warwick Castle offers visitors the chance to wine and dine on unlimited beer and wine and authentic rustic food, all while being eerily entertained by dungeon masters. The event runs throughout the year, including a themed Valentine’s Day special.

Warwick Racecourse
The Warwick Racecourse is another cherished tradition among residents of this town. The racecourse was established in the 1700s and has been a popular town event since then. While the races are modern, the tradition is historical, drawing residents and visitors to the Warwick Racecourse time and time again.

Warwick’s Victorian history is evident in the buildings of the town and in the town’s most popular traditions. Visitors will find that hotels in Warwick are easily accessible to these town attractions and that residents of the town are warm and welcoming to visitors who join them in celebrating Warwick’s Victorian history.
