2 Hairy Bikers No Waiting

October 4th 2006 12:13
I have just discovered a fantastic show called 2 Hairy Bikers, and it's about just that!

2 English guys - bikers - who happen to be hairy and travel the world talking, eating and preparing food. (Not to be confused with 2 fat ladies!)

I was instantly obsessed - partly because I love food but also because, for the last few episodes, they have been in Vietnam, and oh how I love Vietnamese food, and I emplore you to do the same.

I could sit here and bore you about just how much I love the cuisine and everything I love about it, but no, it wouldn't be right, besides I am here to tell you how great this show is and why.

It's great because they are doing their touring on a budget...BBC style (ABC style if you're Aussie). They are going around on motorbikes (of course) and using their surrounds perfectly. No fancy pots and pans or unheard of produce - it's as if they are really well prepared campers - and I guess they are. They are also charming to boot - well I think they're great personalities to watch, funny and they know their way around a camper stove!

That's my 20 cents worth and I am talking it up for the love not the money - I love good television, especially when there's food involved. I have been watching it on pay TV - Lifestyle Food channel, but I think it is also on the ABC...

Here is a link I found:

Now a rave about food wouldn't be right if I didn't add my own personal experiences and opinions on food - I know I said I wouldn't but I can't resist.

If we're talking Vietnamese cuisine then I have to say the first thing and one of the best things is Pho (pronounced fuh).
It is generally a beef soup (Pho Bo) and it has a rich stock, made with fragrant veges and woody spices and then you 'build the soup"
Add:
Rice noodles
green veges like buk choi
bean sprouts
freshly ripped thai basil
Lime juice (many restaurants in Oz serve lemon but lime is best)
and thin beef strips which cook in the broth
Oh and don't hesitate to spice it up with fresh chilli!

I have never been able to make a Pho that I am proud of but I am on the hunt for a good recipe, I do have one that takes 2 days to make (thanks to a hefty master broth). Sure it's worth it BUT when you can get a damn good one for around $8 a bowl, why stay in!!
Oh and throw in another couple of bucks for an entree and you'll also get the tastiest thing on a stick: Sugar cane Prawns!

My picks for a good bowl of Pho in Sydney:
LE Pasteur on George St in the City
The place next door to that (name escapes me - great value!)
Xiclo diagonall yopposite Haymarket in China Town
Viet King - King St Newtown
357 King - King St Newtown

And here's My pic from Ha Long Bay:

Good Luck and Happy eating
