Victims or Violent Thugs?
John Chelsea / NRLnews.com
Gower involved in nightclub scuffle, Gower gropes young girl, Pritchard in knife fight as brother nearly dies, Parra players in drunk training episode, Wes Niqama in 3rd driving unlicenced episode etc etc.
The list is endless, NRL personalities getting caught up in all the wrong headlines again. The question I pose here is, are these players violent and silly thugs? Or are they victims of the powerful media spotlight?
Sure, driving unlicenced or getting drunk at the wrong time is self inflicted - but haven't we all made mistakes? We all know having a mobile phone when drunk is dangerous. As for some reason, many of us like to dial friends and old flames at 3.30am in the morning. But we do not end up on the front of back page of the paper if this occurs.
Footballers have plenty of money on their hands and plenty of spare time, this is also a factor in their rise to all the wrong headlines. With the media spotlight on NRL in Queensland and NSW states, why then do these footballers not visit Victoria or South Australia for a big night out?
Their fun and games wouldn't rate a mention with locals in these parts as they do not follow NRL and snooping media would be none the wiser.
The other aspect is the fans hunger for more gossip headlines. Everyone loves a Beckham and Posh story, or a Britney goes looney story and in NRL parts - we love to hear that a star player has done something naughty.
So in this age of information who is to blame; the snooping media and camera phone slinging fan? or the ever thoughtless NRL star?
One thing is for sure, with NRL 2007 in full swing it's only a matter of time before an off-field incident takes the headline from on-field excitement.
