Unrevoked has made it eisier than ever. All you have to do is go to the link and click on if you have a Windows pc or a Mac and it will do the rest.
You will need to download these drivers as well.
hboot drivers
Some of the advantages of rooting are that you can install root applications like Titanium backup, Rom Manager, and you can use the wifi tethering.
Titanium backup allows you to back up all of your applications.
Rom Manager helps you to install roms like Cyanogen, virtuos, Lithium mod and more. It also helps you install a recovery program. I will go into more detail later.
The biggest advantage for root access is that my battery last a lot longer. I am able to delete stock programs like skype and verizon nav.
Overall I am very happy that I rooted my phone.
