The WEC featherweight title was on the line Saturday night. In one of the most explosive mixed martial arts events ever, featherweight champion and Brazilian phenom Jose Aldo makes the first defense of his title when he takes on former world champion “The California Kid” Urijah Faber
The fight opened up with these two great fighters really respecting each others talent. But Jose Aldo used his range and his premier Maui Tai strikes and did a number on Urijah's right leg. In the midst of the second round after taking numerous leg kicks, Urijah was sent to the canvas after a horrific blow to the right quad. Aldo was chopping down the tree that was the California Kid. These leg kicks totally immobilized Urijah hindering his explosiveness and striking.
The latter rounds Aldo was still teeing off on Faber's legs and caused Urijah to have to switch stances because his inability to withstand the leg blows. Urijah was unable to fight to his strength which is explosiveness and creative striking. Aldo crippled him with the leg shots and caused Urijah to try and take the fight to the ground. Unable to explode into a double leg, Urijah was powerless. Jose Aldo sent Urijah to the canvas late in the fourth round and got him in a mounted crucifix and rained down elbows and shots to Urijah's face. He wasn't able to explode out of the mount and spent the final minute plus of the fourth round just trying to survive the barrage of blows Aldo was firing down on his forehead.
The fifth round Urijah was completely incapable of landing blows to Aldo and was continually dropped to the canvas with leg kicks. The round ended and the decision went unanimously to Jose Aldo. Aldo is beginning to solidify himself as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world.
