The Know It All - by Marcus Hill

Two Years Later: The Melo Trade

February 13th 2013 02:40
In 10 days, it will be two years since Carmelo Anthony was traded from the Denver Nuggets. Both teams got a great deal of talent from the trade, but who will really got the better of the deal.

Typically after a team loses its star player in any sport (i.e. the Cavs, Magic, Bulls, Broncos, 49ers, Chiefs etc), the team has a few down years until the next star arrives. However with the Nuggets, they've had two winning season without Melo. They've made the playoffs (granted they were all first round exit's, but give em a break.) and have done s o with the concept of team ball.

They haven't had a true star player since Melo went to the Knicks. Gallinari and Iguodala have played big roles in their success but neither of them are the outright "star" of the team. This is similar to how the Pistons won a title in 2004. The Nuggets have a much harder road than the Pistons, but that's just to put things in perspective.

The Knicks on the other hand have only had one playoff win in the Melo era. For a star player, this is a pretty lackluster.

This year the Knicks seem on pace to go to the conference finals or possibly even the NBA Finals. But in the playoffs, anything can happen. Melo has only been out of the first round once and besides one time, has never one more than two games in a playoffs series. For somebody as talented and offensively skilled as Melo, this is unacceptable.

The is not solely on Melo, but this is company he doesn't want to be in. He is the only member of the 2003 draft class (Top 5 that is) to not make an NBA Finals appearance. To say the least, we all know Darko Milicic didn't play too big a part in the championship run of the Pistons, but he was there and his moral support did wonders.

This will be a good season to really analyze this trade and see who got the better of the deal, but as of right now, I can't help but believe the Nuggets got the better of this trade.
