Everything Must Go' is based on a short story by Raymond Carver. The film is directed and adapted for the screen by Dan Rush and stars Will Ferrell as Nick Halsey, a man who's definitely on his way down.

Nick is a career salesman who has always been on the top...but not anymore. The film opens with Nick being fired. If that isn't bad enough, Nick arrives home to find that his wife has changed the locks and thrown all his possessions out on the front lawn. What's a guy to do? Well since Nick is an alcholic, the answer is simple...buy beer...a lot of beer.

So in between guzzling one beer after another, Nick rearranges the furniture on his front lawn and makes himself at home. He watches television, listens to music, and spies on his neighbors.

He also makes two new friends...His next door neighbor, Samantha (Rebecca Hall) a pregnant, lonely housewife. Apparently she's given up her photography career to move to Arizona for her husband's job, but he's no where to be found.

Nick's other friend is a chubby awkward young kid, Kenny (Christopher Jordan Wallace). Nick pays Kenny in beef jerky to watch his stuff while he makes a run to the local liquor store.

'Everything Must Go' is a character study about a man who has everything stripped away and is living in a state of complete despair. And now he must find a way to let go of everything...his wife, his belongings, his old way of life...in order to survive.

I really wanted to like this film. It raises important issues. Everyday people are losing their jobs, their homes and in some cases their families. How does a person start over when everything is gone? Unfortunately, "Everything Must Go' doesn't delve deep enough into these profound issues. The film stays on one level as does Will Farrell's performance. But, I do respect him for trying something different as an actor.

This is one of those rare times that John and I agree. We both give 'Everything Must Go' a very low bagel rating. The film opens in theaters, Friday May 13, 2011.

Two Jews On The Beaver

May 9th 2011 00:53
'The Beaver' stars Mel Gibson as Walter Black/The Beaver. The film is directed by Jodie Foster who also plays Meredith, Walter's long suffering wife.

Walter, a once successful toy executive and family man suffers from major depression. No matter what he tries...(pills, therapy, exercise, flagellating himself) Walter cannot shake the feeling that life is meaningless and all is hopeless. This dude is really in the dumps.

Walter's business, JerryCo is going downhill fast. He spends most of his time in bed and his teenage son, Porter (the wonderful Anton Yelchin) is terrified that he is becoming just like him. Porter jots down on Post-its all the ways that he and his dad are similar. As the list grows, Porter becomes more and more freaked out.

Things are not good in the Black home. Meredith is losing patience with her husband...Porter doesn't speak to his father and their seven year old son, Henry (Riley Thomas Stewart) wonders why daddy doesn't come out of his bedroom.

Walter is a suicide waiting to happen...But then, out of the blue, Walter finds a Beaver Puppet...in a dumpster of all places. Walter slips The Beaver onto his hand and...The Puppet starts to talk...And talk and talk. Well Walter is doing all the talking but he's speaking in this loud musical Cockney accent. And nothing will ever be the same for Walter because...

The Beaver is here and he is taking over.

Walter's life begins to change rapidly. The Beaver/Walter introduces a new toy line called 'The Beaver Mr. Woodchopper Kits'. Sales at JerryCo take off worldwide and profits reach new heights.

Even things at home get better. Meredith is excited to have the man she fell in love with back...Even if Walter does make love to her as...The Beaver.

Unfortunately, the only one not buying into the 'new Walter' is Porter. Lucky for him he meets a girl, Norah (Jennifer Lawrence) who he falls for...big time.

'The Beaver' is a beautiful dark film...It's a study in depression but it's not depressing. Despite the controversy that surrounds Mel Gibson, he is one hell of an actor. He gives a very complex, compelling performance as both The Beaver and Walter Black. This is not, at times. An easy film to watch, but it is one that will grab you and not let go...well after you left the theater.

As usual, the 'Two Jews On Film' disagree. I really enjoyed it...My husband...Not so much. 'The Beaver' opens in theaters, Friday, May 6, 2011

'Hesher' directed by Spencer Susser stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Hesher. There are several things that Hesher likes a lot, loud music, pornography and burning stuff to the ground. He brings all of his favorite things into the lives of 13 year old TJ (Devin Brochu) and his father Paul (Rainn Wilson) when he unexpectedly takes up residence in their garage, uninvited.

Told through the eyes of TJ, HESHER is a dark fairy tale about an eccentric unhinged drifter who appears out of nowhere to help a struggling family deal with loss. TJ and his father are simply going through the motions of their daily life, quietly grieving each day...The father can barely get out of bed..T.J. gets beaten up by a bully at school daily.

Hesher arrives like a force of nature not stopping for anything or anyone in his path.

Paul is so grief stricken that he can't muster the strength to evict this strange squatter from his home and soon, the long haired tattooed Hesher becomes a fixture in the household.

Hesher befriends TJ's grandmother (the wonderful Piper Laurie) who lives with them. Grandma is dying and she's extremely lonely - the family is too busy with their own pain to even notice. But Hesher does. He shows Grandma appreciation for her cooking...he listens to all her stories and even agrees to go on a walk with her.

T. J's just as lonely when he starts to develop a relationship with Nicole (Natalie Portman) a supermarket cashier. who comes to his rescue one day. She's his first friend and of course like all 13 year olds, he falls in love with her.

Hesher means lover of heavy metal music. The character Hesher is a mystic...He IS heavy metal...Volatile, menacing, vulgar, rude and he doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks of him. Hesher is also one of the most interesting, complex and original characters I've seen in a film in a very long time. Joseph Gordon-Levitt kills it as this ultimate wise bad ass.

"Hesher' will take you on a trip...a really good trip.

"The Two Jews' On Film' were actually on the same page with this one and gave it 4 1/2 bagels out of 5...with the works. 'Hesher' opens in theaters, Friday May 13, 2011.

Hanna, played by Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronana of 'Atonement' is a 16 year old girl...bright, inquisitive and a devoted daughter. But she is far from your typical teenager...Hanna has the strength, the stamina and the smarts of a super solder.
