TV or Not TV - December 2006

Slow Thursday

December 21st 2006 16:32
Hi everybody,
Hope your day is good. Have all the kids home from school today so everything is hectic. Not a lot of new things on television this week as everything is in repeats. But I do tape the late night talk shows every night to watch the next morning. Just finished watching Letterman and Renee Zelwegger was on. May I be the first to say that I just don’t get her appeal? I think she’s one of those people that if she wasn’t famous we’d say “Eh.” She’s okay. I know she won an Oscar but so did Mira Sorvino. Can’t take her “acting” but to each his own I guess. But anyway, whenever she’s on talk shows, I just get the feeling that she doesn’t get “it.” I don’t want everybody to feel like I’m just picking on her but she just happened to be on now and it reminded me.

I have stated many times how I feel about ABC canceling Daybreak. I’m about to watch the first episode after the cancellation on the internet and am leery about it. Will let you know later how that went.
Also, as I’ve mentioned previously, I have so many shows backlogged on my tivo that I just finished watching the special the History Channel about the Mayflower’s crossing. I have to say that it was fascinating. Never really studied it that much beforehand but the conditions they traveled under were miserable. It took some brave people to go into the unknown like that. Of course, once they got here what they did to the Natives was terrible as we all know but it was included in the special as well. If it is ever repeated, I urge everybody to watch it. Anyway, on to Daybreak and I will post later about that.
Later,
Jonathan

Feeling Lost

December 20th 2006 16:00
Good morning everybody,
Due to the holiday week, most of the shows have been repeats and for that I am grateful. I have mentioned this before in other blogs that my wife and I are ridiculously behind in our television shows. See, we have 4 tivos in the house. One in my home office and 3 in various other rooms in the house. We have shows that we watch as a couple that we record on the other three and shows that I watch alone in my office. Because my wife works, she is very tired at night and after getting the three kids to bed, it really gives us a two hour window to watch television together between 8 and 10 p.m. Usually by 9:30, my wife’s eyes are closing and that last half hour is a struggle for her. Due to these circumstances, we have presently approximately 220 hours of television recorded on our tivos. It is tough to have conversations about shows with people since we are now basically watching season premiere week while everybody else is in mid season. It is also tough to avoid news about shows, so I have heard various things before actually getting to watch it. (Thankfully, my wife is not into the reality shows, so I get to watch those as they happen) Not the end of the world but it is frustrating. So everybody please keep the information to themselves, since my wife and I are going to watch an early season Prison Break tonight. Gee, I really hope that Tweener makes it to safety.

People who have read what I have written regularly know my dismay over ABC’s decision to pull Lost until February, just a horrible decision. At least I was enjoying Daybreak but now that’s been cancelled so I don’t get that and I’m still stuck without Lost. Lost is one of the shows that I watch the night it’s on, since my wife doesn’t like it (I know, she’s crazy). I’m obsessed. I read all the message boards searching for clues and need information as it happens. I am suffering immensely without it. Please ABC, please start it earlier and let me get a fix.
Oh well,
Until later,
Jonathan

Depressed on Tuesday

December 19th 2006 18:05
Good morning everyone.
I just got the baby in for a nap so here we go. Wrote yesterday on the Survivor finale and was reading some newspaper articles about it today and some of their thoughts on the reunion show. I saw where somebody wrote that they should spend less time on what the losers are up to now and more time on the strategy that the winners employed. While I agree with that aspect of it, that we should get to hear how the winners plotted, not everyone rooted for the person that won. People pick their favorites to root for just like in sports teams. I do want to hear what some of them are doing since they left the show. Of course the ones I hated I could not care less but it’s still nice to just hear something before they fade off into obscurity. Perhaps the answer is a two part show but I recognize that that can lead to us being Survivor’ed out. If not, then the CBS Early show does interview the winner and runner up only so we can get more of the strategy then. Give all of the participants a chance to shine for their brief moment during the reunion show.
Now, I have written about this before in other blogs, but it is bugging me again since it is now official. I am a fan of Daybreak. From what I read, one of the very few. But nonetheless, I enjoy the show. I found it gripping and I enjoyed the twists and to guess where it was going. I read over the weekend that ABC has pulled the plug on the show and the remaining episodes will be shown over the internet. While it is inconvenient, I will make do but from what I understand it will only be the episodes that were shot already and that doesn’t sound to me like there will be any resolution to the show. I hate being invested in shows where the ending will never be known. I realize that’s a chance with any new show but at least give a wrap up show to the program’s fans. It happened to me last year with Reunion and several years ago with Now and Again which ended its run with a cliffhanger that was also never resolved. I hate that and find that it puts a misplaced trust by the viewer in the network that they can invest in a serialized show. If I don’t get a satisfactory ending to Daybreak, there’s going to be hell to pay! Well, at least a tersely worded blog.
Later,
Jonathan

Survivor

December 18th 2006 15:59
Good morning everybody,
Here we are on the morning after the latest survivor finale. When the show first started years ago, I have to say that I hated the show. The idea that somebody who was dominating or doing well on all of the events was the one everybody hoped to get rid of was ludicrous for me. I don’t like the concept of rewarding mediocrity. Also, I hate the notion of anything that promotes lying and backstabbing in a game. I’m not that old (38) but I don’t like teaching this to children as an example of what to do to win at something. However, I must now say that I am addicted. (Even though I still don’t like the lying and deceiving parts). This past season I was extremely skeptical at first when they started with tribes made up of races. I thought it was a terrible idea and thought the best way to promote diversity was integrating as many different cultures and ethnicities within each tribe, not separating them. Thankfully this experiment only lasted an episode or two. After they finally killed that idea I loved the season. I know there is still a certain amount of deception but I didn’t see the out and out bitterness and backstabbing as in other seasons. I was happy when they got Candace out after the mutiny she took part in, where given a chance to bolt her tribe she did so. I loved when the Aitu 4 picked off the larger tribe of 8 one by one. I was rooting for Yul the whole time but wouldn’t have been upset if Ozzy won. That is one of the first times that happens in Survivor for me. Usually, I am going to be pissed off if one of the finalists win, yelling at the tv “How can they not see through this person?” But on this installment, I would have been happy if any of the 4 Aitu members won. I was happy with the way they treated each other and were pretty upfront with each other. I also was very pleased that with the final 4, they allowed Becky and Sundra to play it out in a tie-breaker. After everything that they had been through, neither deserved to be voted off by their own tribe and that was the best way to play it. I had been hoping so before they showed it and then Ozzy made it happen. It was the only fair thing to do and this way there could be no animosity among either of the two contestants that were involved. Also, normally during Survivor I’m screaming (I know, I scream a lot at the tv, what can I say? I’m a lunatic) about the voting process. I always think the contestants don’t strategize enough and vote the wrong people out. I did do that once when they voted Jonathan off. To me, I would have protected that guy with everything I had since he was so despised. I would have pulled him into the finals with me if I could to let everybody yell at him and give me the votes but I guess if I am not in their shoes, I don’t know the dynamics of what is going on and it still seemed to work out well for the finalists, especially Yul who apparently had a pact with Adam for his vote if they voted Jonathan off first. All in all, it was an enjoyable season that I don’t know if I will see again there. If that was the case then so be it and on with the lying, deceiving and backstabbing.
