Those naughty old Turks. What is the problem now?

A draft report to the European Union recommends against the admission of Turkey to the European Union, something they have been wanting and wishing for a very long time. Santa, or his Turkish equivalent, is not ready to deliver yet. The Turkish prime minister repeatedly has been saying that they have been good girls and boys now so what is EU’s problem already. Can it be this thing about Turkish noses, talking in a funny language, driving in hot taxis and being Moslem like the Turks keep saying it is? It seems not.
Anyone who has been to Turkey and knows a bit about Turkish history will agree that it is a very strange place. Sometimes that can be good but not there. You can go to jail for not being Turkish enough or saying that the Turks massacred the Armenians (they did but you are not supposed to say it) or insulting Ataturk or upsetting the army. The report does not like the way that the army continually interferes in politics. The report is also very upset that the Turks have closed their ports to Cyprus because Cyprus is another EU country. The reason the Turks have done this is they do not like the way that Cyprus treats its Turkish citizens. They can talk? If you do go to prison they are still in the nasty habit of doing things to your genitals, making you sit on coke bottles or just giving you an old fashioned beating but let’s not call it torture.
The Turks keep promising to be good but may be it’s just like what Nogood Boyo in Under Milkwood by Dylan Thomas who sits on the sea and laments, “I try to be good but nobody ‘ll let me.”
