Tomorrow we will leave the serenity, mixed with a little flash, to go to the "burbs" to grandma's house. We will see the relatives who all live as far from the city as they can comfortably get without making themselves totally shut off from the relatives that help them in time of need, but far enough away from the perceived threat of them thar city folk.
It is so hard to believe that weird attitudes still exist, actual bigotry, that invades the brain of even politicians to the point where their decision making is compromised and the citezenry are so swayed by their convoluted propoganda that they themselves begin acting in this bizarre, anti intelligent way. Case in point, one of the fastest growing and most populace counties in Georgia, which is kind of retro human anyway (but that's a story for another day), had a dilema: it's the year 2000 something. There are no sidewalks in this county anywhere except in the heart of small townsquares and no mass transit. The powers that were never saw a need for them because, hey, it's the burbs and the nearest convenience store is 5 miles away, and besides, if you dont have a car and a great job, dripping with spendable cash, you shouldn't be here.
So since sidewalks take time to build, they fished around for a mass transit soultion. MARTA, THE mass transit of Atlanta said they would not only supply busses for bus routes, but would extend the rail lines into this county since it's north line ended at the county line. So solution found, right? Wrong. A small group of redneck, southern hick county commisioners got on a year long MARTA bashing, mass transit, rapid rail propaganda campaign that conjured up all those bad images of some type of New York gang attacked rail car all painted up with grafiti. Indeed, they had their constituents actually believing that city folk wear holsters underneath their clothing. That we get into western style gunfights, you know, the high noon stuff, "Draw" , on a daily basis so "we don't want those types, jumpin on a rapid rail car, comin up here and shootin people". But, seriously, they had people beleiving that hoodlums were going to take the train, break into peoples homes, then make MARTA their getaway car. And that MARTA was going to condone, and even help with the theft!
Guess what? The country bumkin mentatlity, suburbian, isolationist residents voted like 90% to never allow MARTA, or any other city type project, company, or entity to threaten their borders again. And those commisioners were all smug and happy that they had so effectively spread lies. But, actually, in reality they set their county back ten years in development and 50 years in attitude. Because in the end, it was about racism. It was about a perceived threat of having black, and minority street gangs and thugs and theives having convenient access to their county by using the whole system of mass transit, trains and bus routes, to attack the rich homes. Yes, they were convinced that the sight of a man carrying a 52 inch Flat screen TV on the train is a common sight, because after all, they are city folk!
Ok, that's not what I meant to discuss today but it's off my chest. This holiday season, please remember these couple of things: we are all brothers and sisters through Christ, You have to have an "Urban" before you can have a "Sub - Urban", and please wash your hands before eating. Thank you!
